This move is aimed at boosting the sales of its Twitter Blue subscription service.

The company, which was acquired by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk last year, is seeking to increase its revenue and user base, and the introduction of Twitter Blue was one of its major updates.

Twitter Blue is a subscription service that includes several features that users have been requesting, including long-form tweets and the ability to undo or edit tweets. To make the subscription more attractive, Musk announced that it would also include the blue tick verification badge, which previously was only given to accounts that met certain criteria, such as being a public figure, celebrity, or brand.

Starting April 1, 2023, users who want to obtain the verified badge will have to pay a monthly fee in addition to providing their mobile phone number. The cost of the subscription varies from country to country, with businesses and organizations in Nigeria expected to pay N460,500 every month. Additionally, organizations will have to pay an extra N23,030 monthly fee for each individual or business affiliated with them to get verified.

The move to charge for the verified badge is part of Musk’s aggressive push to recoup the $44 billion he invested in acquiring Twitter last year. While Twitter Blue was initially rolled out for individuals, the verification for businesses, which comes with a gold badge, will be available globally starting March 31, 2023.

Twitter has indicated that the prices for the verified badge are subject to change. The company is hoping that this move will encourage more users to sign up for its subscription service, which will generate additional revenue for the company. With the introduction of these changes, Twitter is poised to usher in a new era of social networking, one in which users will have to pay for premium features and services.
