US Election: Threads Launches Strategy To Tackle Misinformation

Meta’s Threads is taking strides to combat misinformation as national elections approach.

Users reported fact-checks surfacing on posts, with engagement confirmed between Threads and fact-checking organizations.

While warning labels, denoting “False Information,” have been introduced, direct fact-checking on Threads content is yet to be fully implemented.

One notable incident involved a video falsely claiming to be from a France 24 broadcast, exposed as AI-generated through diligent fact-checking.

However, some features, like fact-checking links and informational warnings, appeared underdeveloped in tests, particularly on desktop.

As Threads evolves, it aims to differentiate itself from its rival X by incorporating a comprehensive fact-checking approach rather than relying on crowdsourcing.

X, which enlists independent volunteers, faces challenges in achieving consensus, despite support from figures like Elon Musk.

Meta’s cautious approach with Threads stands out, steering clear of amplifying news and political content—a notable departure from X, where verified accounts have occasionally disseminated debunked claims.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasized that Threads will not actively amplify news, aligning with Meta’s commitment to curbing misinformation.

In a recent policy shift, Meta announced it will no longer proactively surface political content in recommendations on Threads and Instagram.

Despite this, news and politics may still find a place in the app’s ” today’s topics” feature.

Meta: Threads App Adds New Features to Boost Usage

TECHDIGEST– Meta’s text-based app Threads is rolling out new features to boost usage. The app has added the ability to see your liked posts, a new media upload quality option, and the ability to sort your following list.

Threads users can now find their liked posts in Settings > Your Likes, which is accessible through the profile page. The new media upload quality option allows users to upload images and videos in higher quality. Additionally, Threads is now allowing users to sort their following list based on “Latest first” and “Earlier first” criteria.

These are small but welcome updates for Threads. However, the app still faces an uphill battle to maintain its user base. Launched last month, Threads got off to a stellar start with 100 million users signing up for the service in the first five days. However, stats from various analytics companies have indicated that the app’s usage has dipped over time.

Meta is hoping that the new features will help to reverse this trend. The company has also hinted that more features, such as post-search and a web version, are coming in the next few weeks.

Twitter’s ad Revenue Plummets 50% Since Elon Musk’s Takeover

TECHDIGEST– Since its acquisition by Elon Musk for $44 billion in October last year, Twitter has seen a drastic decline in advertising revenue, losing nearly half of its revenue in the process. Despite initial expectations for increased sales in June, the company struggled to meet projections.

Musk’s cost-cutting measures, including laying off about half of Twitter’s staff, have not been sufficient to bring back advertisers who departed after changes to content moderation rules.

READALSO: Researchers develop 3D bioprinting tech for cancer cells treatment

Meanwhile, rival app Threads has surged in popularity, boasting around 150 million users and benefiting from its connection to Instagram, granting access to a potential two billion users.

The mounting pressure on Twitter is compounded by its heavy debt load, with negative cash flow and the need to reach positive cash flow before pursuing other endeavors, as stated by Musk.

While Musk is optimistic about turning Twitter around, its $13 billion debt to be paid by the end of July adds further strain. The company is targeting $3 billion in revenue for 2023, a significant drop from $5.1 billion in 2021. Despite the challenges, Twitter’s new chief executive, Linda Yaccarino, plans to focus on video, creator and commerce partnerships, signaling a continued commitment to advertising sales. However, the road to recovery for Twitter remains uncertain as it faces tough competition from Threads and grapples with financial pressures.
