The Federal Government and the United States Agency for International Development have joined forces to drive technological innovation and sustainable development initiatives in the country.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Media and Corporate Communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr Felix Ale, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, this collaboration was solidified during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States of America where Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, met with USAID’s Chief Innovation Officer, Mohammed Abdel-Kader.

The statement noted that their discussions focused on harnessing technology to address pressing developmental challenges in Nigeria.

According to Nnaji, the meeting underscored the urgency of innovative partnerships, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and digital financial inclusion.

“These collaborations are crucial not only for improving the lives of underserved populations but also for bolstering Nigeria’s burgeoning tech ecosystem,” he said.

The minister emphasised the potential of technology to create impactful solutions that can uplift marginalised communities and contribute to the nation’s overall economic growth.

According to him, one of the central themes of the discussions was the role of AI in enhancing agricultural practices in Nigeria.

He added that with food security being a critical concern, both parties acknowledged the need for technological innovations that can optimise farming techniques.

“By harnessing advanced technologies, we aim to support small holder farmers and meet the rising food demands of our nation while ensuring sustainable practices,” he stated.

Nnaji said the focus on agriculture reflects a broader strategy to improve productivity and resilience against climate change, which poses significant threats to the food supply.

Energy access, another major issue, was prominently featured in the dialogue.

Nnaji added the necessity for deploying off-grid and renewable energy technologies, which are vital for reaching Nigeria’s energy goals.

He said the discussions included collaboration opportunities under USAID’s Power Africa initiative, aimed at expanding electricity access through cleaner, sustainable solutions.

“We must integrate AI into grid management and explore distributed renewable energy technologies to ensure a reliable power supply for our communities,” he noted.

Furthermore, the minister said the significance of the meeting extends beyond discussions, as Nigeria and USAID agreed to formalise a partnership dedicated to identifying and scaling innovative technologies.

He added that the collaboration aims to launch joint research and pilot projects in critical sectors such as healthcare and education, where AI solutions have the potential to bring about transformative changes.

“Our partnership with USAID will be instrumental in driving the innovative solutions necessary to meet our national development goals and improve the quality of life for our citizens,” Nnaji said.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its decision to send its first citizen into space. This historic initiative comes following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. firm Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) as part of Nigeria’s Human Space Flight programme.

The announcement was made by Mathew Adepoju, Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of space exploration and opens new opportunities for scientific research and technological advancement,” Adepoju stated.

This endeavor highlights Nigeria’s dedication to advancing its capabilities in space science and technology, positioning the nation as an emerging player in the global space community.

The initiative is expected to foster research and development, providing numerous benefits and opportunities for the country.

“The Human Space Flight programme is one of the cardinal objectives of our National Space Policy,” Adepoju explained.

“To support this, we established the Department of Physical and Life Sciences three years ago.”

He emphasized the program’s potential to yield significant spinoffs and opportunities for Nigerians.

Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, reinforced the importance of human space flight within Nigeria’s National Space Policy and Programme (NSPP).

The NSPP, approved in 2001, included a 25-year roadmap initiated in 2005 aiming for the first human space flight by 2018.

“We are about six years behind schedule, but the signing of the MoU signifies our commitment to achieving this goal,” Nnaji said.

Sam Hutchison, Co-founder of the Space Exploration and Research Alliance (SERA), highlighted the democratic nature of the selection process for Nigeria’s first astronaut.

“Anyone aged 18 and above can apply. The process will allow Nigerians to choose four potential astronaut candidates before a final selection,” Hutchison said, noting that the program is designed to open opportunities to all Nigerians, not just scientists or engineers.

The collaboration aims to spearhead a transformative cloud migration initiative within the country.

The lead partner at Afri-Tech United and a Nigerian IT expert based in the US, Jacob Uwah, revealed this partnership in a statement.

He highlighted that the strategic alliance was geared towards the development of a Master Cloud Platform, poised to propel Nigeria into a realm of heightened cyber sophistication and global technological leadership.

Uwah said that the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, dedicated several months to deliberating the optimal approach for Nigeria’s groundbreaking technological transformation with the Afri-Tech United team.

He noted that the partnership led to the design of the framework for the Master Cloud Platform.

“This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, paving the way for a new era of cyber excellence,” he said.

Nnaji stated, “This initiative aims to modernise our infrastructure, optimise the public and private sectors, and revitalise many of our traditional revenue-generating ventures, through highly sought-after strategic partnerships.”

The minister added that what was central to the Afri-Tech partnership was the current President Bola Tinubu administration’s goal of producing 2 million tech jobs each year.

Nnaji noted, “The Master Cloud Platform also lays the foundation for Afri-Tech United’s forthcoming Innovation Centre development.

“The vision extends beyond Nigeria’s existing technology centres and is designed to leverage hyper-scale partnerships, offering Nigerian engineers unparalleled access to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and robotics, something that is yet to be seen in the country.

“We’re investing in more than technology; we’re investing in Nigeria’s future. As a country, we are ready to set the global standard, showing the world that Nigeria is leading the cyber renaissance, not just participating in it.”

In a significant move toward technological advancement, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has officially partnered with Domineum/Edenbase UK for the development of Abuja Tech City.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in Abuja on Tuesday, with Minister Uche Nnaji representing the government.Minister Nnaji highlighted the collaborative foundation laid by the MoU, emphasizing its role in fostering technology transfer between the UK consortium and the federal government.

Drawing inspiration from the success of London Tech City, which generated over 61 billion pounds in its fifth year, Nnaji expressed optimism about replicating such success in Nigeria.

The ambitious Abuja Tech City aims to be a Free Trade Zone, a smart and green city housing tech-driven startups, industries, entertainment, schools, parks, and government initiatives.

Minister Nnaji announced that the same consortia responsible for the London Tech City’s development will spearhead the Abuja Tech City Ecosystem.

Originally conceived as Abuja Tech Village (ATV) under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, the project gained renewed focus with recent plans unveiled by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, alongside the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

During a visit to the site in Pyakassa, a vision was revealed to transform the area into a world-class technology hub comparable to London Tech City and Silicon Valley. The directive for illegal occupants to vacate the premises marked a crucial step in realizing the project’s potential, as emphasized by the Minister of FCT.

The compensation for the indigenous community since 2015 underscored the commitment to taking full possession of the land, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for the region.
