The University of Ilorin has been selected as one of the tertiary institutions to host a digital innovation hub under the Federal Government’s Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises programme.

The selection was conveyed in a letter dated June 17, 2025, addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu.

According to the NUC, the initiative will be implemented with support from the Federal Government through the Bank of Industry, in collaboration with the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Agence Française de Développement.

The project aims to foster the growth of job-creating enterprises and equip young Nigerians with 21st-century skills in technology, creativity, and innovation.

Ribadu, in the letter, stated that UNILORIN’s shortlisting was a testament to its demonstrated potential and preparedness to contribute meaningfully to what he described as a “transformative initiative.”

He expressed confidence that the project would strengthen industry-academic linkages, nurture talents, and drive enterprise development across the country.

Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Egbewole, through the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, described the selection as a privilege the university does not take for granted.

He disclosed that the university was already planning to launch an appeal fund for an innovation hub as part of activities to mark its upcoming Golden Jubilee celebration.

Egbewole also assured the Federal Government of the institution’s full cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure smooth and speedy implementation of the initiative.

He said the university remains committed to ensuring the hub delivers value to current and future students, as well as contributing to national development.

UNILORIN doctoral student develops anti-toxins for industries

TECHDIGEST – A doctoral student of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Mr. Abdullahi Rabiu, has announced the discovery of some agriculture-based materials and chemicals as anti-toxins.

The anti-toxins are capable of removing toxins deposited in rivers by industrial companies.

Rabiu, who is also a lecturer at the Bayero University, Kano, disclosed this penultimate Monday at the Faculty Board Room while defending his Ph.D. thesis, titled, “Preparation and Characterization of Mixed Iron Oxides Nanocomposites for Removal of Mordant Dye, Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution”.

His findings show that some effects of the toxins on humans are skin and respiratory problems, cancer, and killing of aqua life.

The student researcher stated that the benefit of his research work was to eradicate toxins from coming in contact with humans in order to avoid problems associated with them.

He also said that his research came to light as a result of a protest from Challawa, a community in Kano.

Rabiu recommended that proper treatments of industrial effluents before their disposal in the environment should be employed.

He also proposed that the present studies should be extended to a pilot scale for industrial application.

The researcher advised that the absorption capacities of different absorbents should be investigated for the removal of other pollutants in both aqueous and real tannery effluents.

In a related development, Mr. Lakunle Olarewaju, who is also a Ph.D student at the Department of Industrial Chemistry has recommended that there should be more interactions between the town and the gown, stating that the “town creates the problem and the gown provides solutions for the town”.

Olarewaju also implored the government to create a ministry that would be charged with the responsibilities of connecting the town with the gown.

He specifically advised the Ministries of Environment at state and federal levels to always be on their toes by discharging their duties as at when due and to the fullest.

UNILORIN To Resume Online January 11

Following the suspension of the nine-month industrial strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senate of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has approved the resumption of academic activities for the Rain Semester from Monday, January 11, 2021.

At its 285th Emergency Meeting held virtually via Zoom Thursday last week, the Senate decided that lectures will hold online in line with the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The resumption of academic activities followed the Senate’s approval of proposals by the Committee of Provost and Deans in their meeting held December 30, 2020.

Other resolutions of the meeting were:*No student will be accommodated on campus for now; there would be 13 weeks of lectures; there will be three weeks of Rain Semester Examinations; There will be only two weeks for marking and computations of results; training of staff for virtual learning would hold January 4 – 8; practical classes will commence after COVID-19 break.

At the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said a resumption date for the institution would be announced after the Senate meets in a few weeks.

“We like following due process. We cannot announce resumption without (the) Senate meeting. So we are going to have senate meeting very soon. We have come up with a proposal which we are going to take to senate meeting for approval. So very soon we are going to make announcement in that area. They should be expecting our report in the next two weeks or three weeks maximum,” Ogundipe said in an interview.
