How GITEX 2022 ‘ll Cement Nigeria’s Place on Global ICT Development Map – Senator Oseni

TECHDIGEST – The Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber security, Mr. Yakubu Oseni, has expressed a firm belief that the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition’, GITEX 2022, presently taking place in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, UAE, will finally put Nigeria on the global map of Information Communication Technology, ICT, and software development, in particular.

Oseni, the incumbent Senator representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly, NASS spoke on the sideline of a tech exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, venue of this year’s GITEX.

The senator made the remarks when he inspected the stands of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) at GITEX.

According to the federal lawmaker, young Nigerian tech innovators are doing great things in terms of launching cutting-edge start-up projects.

“As such, we need to encourage them, and help create awareness for more youth participation in ICT. With that, we won’t be taking the back seat at global ICT exhibitions,” he said.

Sen. Oseni, while explaining the reason behind the passage of the Start-Up Bill by their Ninth Senate, assured that President Muhammadu Buhari will soon sign it into law.

He said: “The Bill is virtually for the youths. It is geared towards encouraging Nigerian youths to embrace ICT and participate in ICT ventures.

“The Bill will also address the problem of funding for start-ups in the country. There is going to be a special fund that will be launched for them”.

Oseni, lauded the participation of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, and Galaxy Backbone, among other agencies supervised by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, at GITEX 2022.

“Their participation at the event will attract investors for the country. And also, it will increase our Foreign Direct Investment, while growing the nation’s economy,” he said.

TECH DIGEST – The Federal Government of Nigeria, today Monday 31st May 2021, formally launched the National Policy on Virtual Engagements in Federal Public Institutions while also commissioning an Emergency Communications Centre and four more Digital Economy Centres across the country.

Chief Host of the event, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami in his address, disclosed that all “Digital Economy projects are carefully thought out and executed efficiently with a view to ensure the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s Digital Economy”.

Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim pantami speaking during the virtual launch

Pantami noted that the Paradigm shift to virtual engagements in official circles globally, occasioned by the COVID 19 Pandemic, necessitated the need for a policy to give legal impetus to the practice in public institutions.

“The Policy which was approved by the Federal Executive Council on the 14th October 2020 was developed in collaboration with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation”, he said.

Speaking further, Pantami noted that the Policy will “institutionalise frameworks and standards within Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of governments as well as government -owned companies using virtual engagement as an administrative procedure in service and significantly reduce the cost of governance”.

In line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, the facilities commissioned under the auspices of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will enhance security, create digital jobs, promote knowledge-based economic growth, increase productivity and enhance commercial and administrative methods.

The Minister reiterated government’s commitment to ensure that no part of the country is left out in the digitalisation process as already, all states of the federation are benefitting from various Digital Economy projects.

On hand to support the Digital Economy drive were Senator Obinna Ogbo representing the Chairman Senate Committee. On Communications, Chairman Senate Committee on ICT and CyberCrimes Senator Yakubu Oseni, Minister of state for works and Housing Engineer Abubakar Aliyu, Minister of state for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Ogar, representative of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr Uwem Ekpo, CEOs of Parastatals and Agencies under the Ministry’s purview among others.

The Emergency Communications Centre is located in Akure, the Ondo state capital, while the Digital Economy Centres are domiciled in Delta State University Abraka, Government Secondary School, Rigasa, Kaduna state and Federal University Gashua, Yobe state.

This brings to a total of sixty four completed and fully functional projects commissioned under the leadership of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
