Telecom Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over FG’s Fibre Optic Cable Project
TECH DIGEST- Stakeholders in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry have voiced concerns regarding the federal government’s ambitious plan to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables nationwide.
These concerns were raised during the Sixth Edition of the Policy Implementation Assisted Forum (PIAFO) held in Lagos. Experts attending the forum, which focused on Nigeria’s digital economy strategy, highlighted potential roadblocks posed by state governments.

A key issue identified is the control state governments exert over Right of Way (RoW) charges, multiple taxation, and levies. Stakeholders emphasized that without addressing these issues, the project – to be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) – may not achieve its objectives.
PIAFO convener, Mr. Omobayo Azeez, stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive Nigeria’s digital economy forward. He explained that the forum aims to foster dialogue between public and private sectors,facilitating unified efforts and accelerating technical efficiency for shared success.
The forum, centred on Nigeria’s strategic digital economy agenda, underscored the need for long-term policy direction and exploration of new avenues to achieve “Accelerate Our Collective Prosperity through Technical Efficiency,” the summit’s theme.
