Nigerian VCs Seek NDPC’s Assistance in Safeguarding Student Data
The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has reached out to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for support in enhancing the data protection capabilities of university VCs and data officers to ensure the secure handling of students’ data.
Professor Yakubu Ochefu, the Secretary General of CVCNU, made this request during a visit by CVCNU members to Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, in Abuja.
He emphasized the importance of data protection education for senior officers in Nigerian universities, praising the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023.
Professor Ochefu noted that Nigerian universities are eager to contribute to the Act’s implementation and expressed the need for collaboration with NDPC.

He highlighted that Vice Chancellors, who already juggle multiple roles, now have an additional responsibility as Chief Data Protection Officers for their universities.
These academic leaders serve as the Chief Accounting Officer, Executive Officer, Academic Officer, and Security Officer, and now, the Chief Data Officer.
They recognize the value of data protection in various university functions, such as form design, personal information handling, and result posting.Prof. Ochefu conveyed their intent to partner with NDPC to organize capacity-building workshops for Vice Chancellors and Data Officers, establishing a compliance template for data protection.
In response, Dr. Olatunji, the National Commissioner of NDPC, praised CVCNU’s initiative in seeking collaboration on data protection.
He stressed the importance of the education sector, given the substantial volume of personal data processed regularly.
