Vertiv Deploys an Undersea Cable Landing Station in Somalia
TECH DIGEST- The installation of the undersea cable landing station (CLS) for Hormuud Telecom in Somalia has been completed by Vertiv, a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions. With more Somalis having access to the internet, this new crucial infrastructure is expected to support regional economic, societal, and digital growth.
With the installation of a new open access cable landing station, Hormuud Telecom hopes to expand Somalis’ access to the internet by introducing cutting-edge and high-quality connectivity solutions.
The Hormuud team decided that working with suppliers who had the ideal mix of technological know-how, experience, and portfolio was needed to get the project started and see it through to completion because of the geographical and technical difficulties posing challenges to the project’s execution.

“This cable landing station is crucial for Somalia’s digital development and for putting the country on the map of the world’s digitalization, all citizens must have access to the internet and data in today’s world, particularly in the post-pandemic world. The project’s objective is to close the current gaps in Somalia’s internet infrastructure. According to Pierre Havenga, managing director of Vertiv in Africa, the installation of this historic undersea cable positions the area for much-needed high-speed internet.
The cable landing station will enable massive acceleration of broadband proliferation and thereby improve online connectivity in and around Somalia. It will accommodate various submarine cables, in turn streamlining the process of establishing cross-connections to local and global partners, making it easier, quicker, and more efficient for all stakeholders.
