WhatsApp has started rolling out its long-anticipated username feature, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature is currently being introduced to a limited number of users as part of a phased rollout. Development of the feature dates back to 2023, when early indications appeared in test versions of the app.
Users with access can create unique usernames through the settings menu, with specific requirements including a minimum of three characters and restrictions on formatting, such as avoiding web-like prefixes or domain-style endings.
The introduction of usernames is expected to enhance user privacy by enabling communication without revealing personal contact details.
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is expected to expand the availability of the feature globally in the coming months.
