X has reintroduced voice messaging within its direct messaging service, X Chat.
The feature allows users to send voice notes in both private and group conversations by pressing the voice input icon within the chat interface. A press-and-hold function, with an option to swipe up for continuous recording, is also available.
The update is part of efforts to enhance X Chat’s competitiveness with other messaging platforms that already support audio messaging.
The development follows recent structural changes within the company, including the spin-off of X Chat as a standalone application. It also comes after earlier user backlash when the voice notes feature was temporarily removed.
X Chat currently supports additional features such as message editing, file sharing, disappearing messages and voice and video calls. The company says conversations are end-to-end encrypted, although some security experts have raised concerns about the level of protection compared to other apps.
The changes align with owner Elon Musk’s broader vision of transforming X into a multi-functional platform.
