The Chief Executive Officer of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has warned that artificial intelligence could replace a significant share of entry-level white-collar jobs within the next one to five years.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Amodei said advances in AI are accelerating faster than many organisations and policymakers anticipate, with systems now capable of handling tasks traditionally assigned to junior employees.
These include summarising documents, drafting reports, brainstorming ideas, and conducting basic financial analysis—functions that form the foundation of many roles in sectors such as finance, consulting, and technology.
Amodei noted that AI has evolved rapidly in recent years, progressing from capabilities comparable to a high school student to those of a college-level performer, with further improvements expected.
While highlighting the potential benefits of AI in areas such as healthcare, energy, and scientific research, he warned that the same capabilities could disrupt labour markets and shrink the pipeline for early-career professionals.
He added that the pace of development makes it difficult to predict outcomes, but suggested that significant labour market impacts could emerge within the next few years. Rather than attempting to halt AI development, Amodei urged governments to focus on managing the transition through reskilling initiatives and policies aimed at mitigating economic disruption.
