Apple is reportedly planning to introduce an automatic chat deletion feature for its overhauled AI-powered Siri assistant as part of a broader privacy-focused artificial intelligence strategy expected to be unveiled at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) later this year.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the revamped Siri experience could allow users to automatically delete conversations with the voice assistant after 30 days or one year, while also giving users the option to retain chats permanently.
The move signals Apple’s effort to differentiate its AI offerings from competitors such as OpenAI and Google by placing stronger emphasis on user privacy and data control.
Apple first announced its partnership with OpenAI during WWDC 2024, integrating ChatGPT into Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. Under the arrangement, Siri could redirect certain user requests to ChatGPT, while iPhone users were also able to subscribe to ChatGPT services through Apple’s ecosystem.
However, tensions between the two companies appear to be growing. Bloomberg recently reported that OpenAI is preparing legal action against Apple over what it considers a breakdown in the AI partnership. OpenAI reportedly believes the collaboration failed to deliver the commercial and strategic advantages it expected from integrating ChatGPT into Apple devices.
At the same time, reports suggest Apple has been exploring deeper integration with Google’s Gemini AI models for future Siri upgrades, a development said to have frustrated OpenAI, which had expected wider deployment of ChatGPT across Apple products.
Apple executives are expected to position privacy as a central pillar of the company’s AI strategy during the upcoming WWDC event, as competition intensifies among major technology companies racing to expand AI-powered consumer products.
