The Federal Ministry of Education will officially launch the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) on July 1 as part of efforts to modernise education data management across Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit (SPOIU), Office of the Minister of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, announced the launch during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
DNEMIS is a flagship component of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
The platform is designed to standardise education data management across all levels of education by replacing fragmented reporting systems with a unified national database.
According to Onigbanjo, the system will capture information on learners, teachers, schools and education investments in real time to support planning, budgeting, policymaking, monitoring and service delivery.
He said Nigeria’s education sector has struggled for years with fragmented systems and inconsistent reporting, limiting effective planning and accountability.
“For many years, education planning and administration relied on fragmented systems, inconsistent reporting processes and limited access to reliable and timely data. These challenges constrained effective planning, weakened accountability and limited the sector’s ability to respond to emerging realities,” he said.
“Data is no longer a back-office function. It is becoming the engine of education reform in Nigeria.”
Special Assistant to the Minister on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Mojoyin Adebajo, said DNEMIS will also digitise the Annual School Census and provide public access to selected official education data through an interactive online portal.
She said the platform would enable government agencies, researchers, development partners, civil society organisations, journalists and members of the public to access official education statistics.
UNICEF Education Specialist for Planning, Monitoring, Data and Research, Saka Ibraheem, said the long-term objective is to integrate all education management platforms into a single national system by the end of next year.
According to him, the integrated platform will combine the Education Management Information System, Teacher Management Information System and individual learner records into one database.
He added that the system will assign unique identifiers to learners, enabling authorities to track school enrolment, monitor student movement and reduce dropout rates nationwide.
Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) Coordinator Abubakar Isah said measures have been put in place to ensure the platform complies with Nigeria’s data protection laws and safeguards sensitive education data.
