The FutureMap Foundation has onboarded 80 fellows into its newly launched Future Tech Fellowship (FTF), selected from a pool of over 2,400 applicants drawn from Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon.
The programme spans four technical tracks; Product Design, Data Science, Frontend Development, and Backend Development, with 20 fellows per track. Participants were drawn from all 36 Nigerian states, underscoring the scale of interest in outcome-driven digital training across the country.
Speaking on the initiative, Executive Director Dr Shuaib Sani Shuaib said the core challenge facing Africa’s digital workforce was no longer access to information, but the ability to convert learning into employable competence. He described the fellowship as “a pipeline for elite, pre-vetted talent ready to contribute from day one.”
The curriculum is structured around practical application rather than theory, requiring fellows to develop real-world projects and engage in problem-solving scenarios that mirror industry conditions. The programme also incorporates professional development components covering communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and business skills.
The launch comes against the backdrop of a widening digital skills gap across Sub-Saharan Africa, where demand for competencies in software development, data analysis, and product design is outpacing the supply of job-ready graduates. In Nigeria, employers continue to report shortages in key technical areas even as youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge.
FutureMap Foundation says the fellowship is part of a broader strategy to develop African talent capable of competing globally while contributing to local innovation ecosystems.
