Google DeepMind Co-Founder Urges Ethics for Nvidia AI Chips

TECH DIGEST- Google DeepMind Co-Founder Urges Ethical Use Mandate for Nvidia AI Chips in the U.S. Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind, has called for a significant shift in the regulation of Nvidia’s artificial intelligence (AI) chips in the United States.

His proposition centers on permitting the sale of Nvidia’s AI chips exclusively to buyers who commit to ethical and responsible use of the technology. Suleyman advocated for the establishment of global standards for AI usage and suggested that companies should, at the very least, adhere to the same ethical commitments already made by leading AI firms to the White House.

This call for a standardized ethical framework aligns with the voluntary commitments made by prominent AI companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, who pledged to implement safeguards such as watermarking AI-generated content to enhance the safety and accountability of AI technologies. Suleyman emphasized that the United States should not only encourage but also mandate that purchasers of Nvidia chips align with these voluntary commitments, if not surpass them.

The backdrop to this plea for stricter controls on Nvidia’s AI chips involves the recent expansion of export restrictions imposed by the United States. These restrictions, initially aimed at curbing the sale of advanced artificial intelligence chips to China, have now encompassed other regions, including select Middle Eastern countries.

Mustafa Suleyman, who also serves as the CEO of Inflection AI, a Microsoft-backed AI startup, emphasized the importance of ethical AI deployment and responsible technology use. Inflection AI secured a substantial $1.3 billion investment in June, with backing from Nvidia and other notable firms, underscoring the growing significance of ethical considerations in the AI landscape. Suleyman’s advocacy highlights the evolving discourse surrounding AI ethics and the need for robust regulatory measures to ensure responsible AI innovation and adoption in the United States and beyond.
