Meta and eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica have introduced a new range of artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses priced from $299, significantly lower than previous premium models.

The new devices, called Meta Glasses, were announced on Tuesday as the companies seek to expand adoption of AI-enabled wearable technology.

Unlike earlier smart glasses developed in partnership with brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley, the latest products will be sold under a standalone Meta branding.

The glasses feature new frame styles and colours, including a collection developed in collaboration with media personality Kylie Jenner.

Meta said the devices are the first AI glasses to launch with Meta AI powered by Muse Spark, a model developed by the company’s Superintelligence Labs.

The launch forms part of Meta’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into consumer hardware and deliver what the company describes as “personal intelligence” through wearable devices.

The success of Meta’s earlier smart glasses has attracted interest from other technology companies, including Apple and Google, which are also exploring AI-powered eyewear products.

According to data from the International Data Corporation, global smart glasses shipments reached 9.6 million units last year, with Meta accounting for more than 76% of the market.

The announcement comes shortly after Snap introduced a new pair of augmented reality glasses priced at $2,195. Unlike Snap’s AR-focused product, Meta’s glasses are designed primarily for AI interactions and text-based information display.

Meta said the new devices are intended to make AI technology more accessible by offering a lower-priced entry point into the growing smart eyewear market.
