New Lawsuit Emerges Against OpenAI, Microsoft Over ChatGPT Training

Two U.S. nonfiction authors, Nicholas Basbanes and Nicholas Gage, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming the companies utilized their works without permission to train AI models, including ChatGPT.

The authors argue that this unauthorized use infringes their copyrights, jeopardizing their livelihoods. The lawsuit alleges a deliberate theft of copyrighted material, accusing the defendants of building a billion-dollar AI industry by unlawfully incorporating the authors’ works.

Seeking various remedies, including an injunction and damages, the authors highlight the stark contrast between their limited resources and the defendants’ access to significant capital.

Despite Microsoft’s ownership stake in ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI, the authors stress the alleged misconduct in the companies’ AI training practices.
