Presidential Aide Denies Reports of Microsoft Shutdown in Nigeria

Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on media and publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has refuted claims suggesting that American tech giant Microsoft is ceasing operations in Nigeria. In a statement issued on Thursday, Ajayi clarified that while Microsoft is re-aligning roles, there is no indication of a complete shutdown of its operations in the country.

On May 8, reports surfaced indicating that Microsoft had laid off workers at its Africa Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, leaving many questioning the future of the company’s presence in Nigeria.

Confirming the layoffs, a staff member cited uncertainty surrounding the reasons behind the workforce reduction.

However, Ajayi emphasized that the affected staff members numbered less than 30 and that the Africa Development Centre is merely a department within Microsoft’s business in Nigeria, not the entirety of its operations.

“Africa Development Centre is just a department within Microsoft business in Nigeria,” Ajayi stated. “Contrary to incorrect media reports and @PeterObi’s naked dance, the Africa Development Centre is also not shutting down.”

Ajayi elaborated on Microsoft’s re-alignment strategy, explaining that impacted staff members would have the opportunity to apply for new roles within the company.

He highlighted that this process is a standard practice within the organization. However, those unable to secure new positions within Microsoft or seeking opportunities elsewhere will be asked to depart.

Addressing comments made by Peter Obi, Ajayi dismissed them as sensational, stating that the situation at Microsoft does not warrant the “earthquake” impression portrayed.

Obi had expressed concern over the reported shutdown, citing its potential impact on Nigeria’s aspirations to become a technology and innovation hub in Africa.

While acknowledging the restructuring within Microsoft, Ajayi assured that the company remains committed to its operations in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of clarity amidst swirling rumors and speculations.
