Fifty selected young unemployed Nigerians have completed a four-week intensive digital skills bootcamp under the Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) initiative, gaining practical training in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and IT Essentials.

The programme, a collaborative effort between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Cisco, was hosted at NITDA’s South West Zonal Office in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa , the Head of the South West Zonal Office, Mrs. Chioma Okee-Agugwo, described the initiative as a vital component of Nigeria’s digital future. “This is not just a closing ceremony. It is the launchpad for new journeys—anchored in digital knowledge and powered by innovation,” she remarked.

According to the Director General, the initiative is rooted in NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0) and reflects key focus areas including Digital Literacy, Emerging Technologies, and Youth Empowerment. It also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to accelerate economic diversification through digitisation, innovation, and skills development.

Inuwa noted that the DL4ALL initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader commitment to digital inclusion—ensuring that no one is left behind in the evolving digital economy. It also supports the ambitious goal of achieving 70% digital literacy by 2027, championed by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. This national vision aims to equip millions of Nigerians with the skills required to thrive in a tech-driven world.

He further emphasized the importance of empowering youth with globally relevant skills. “They are no longer just consumers of technology. They are creators, innovators, and future employers,” he said.

The NITDA boss explained that throughout the bootcamp, participants engaged in hands-on learning experiences designed to build both technical proficiency and digital leadership capabilities.

“This is only the beginning,” he stated. “Through our zonal strategy, we are bringing innovation closer to local communities. This is how we democratise access and unlock Nigeria’s full digital potential.”

Inuwa expressed appreciation to Cisco for delivering high-impact training and called on stakeholders to continue investing in partnerships, people, and platforms that drive digital inclusion.

He asserted that the newly certified participants are now equipped to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s digital economy—armed with the skills to build solutions, secure infrastructure, and launch tech ventures that solve real-world problems.

At the end of the bootcamp, participants demonstrated their knowledge through impressive presentations that showcased the integration of skills acquired across Data Science, AI, and IT Essentials. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is collaborating with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to embed digital literacy as a general course in all Nigerian universities.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the NUC headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, this collaboration builds on the success of the Digital Literacy for All initiative (DL4ALL) implemented at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and marks a significant milestone in advancing digital skills and preparing Nigeria’s youth for the digital economy.

He emphasised that equipping students with essential digital skills through formal education is critical to achieving Nigeria’s digital economy goals. He explained that NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0) has 8 pillars, with fostering digital literacy and cultivating talent as a priority.

“We aim to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030. Embedding digital skills as a general course in universities is a sustainable solution to achieve this target,” he added.

Building on the Nasarawa State University pilot, where digital literacy was introduced as a self learning credit-earning course with support from Cisco, NITDA seeks to replicate the model nationwide.

“With NUC’s support, we can make digital literacy a standard requirement like English and Mathematics, empowering students to navigate and contribute to the digital economy effectively,” said Inuwa.

Emphasising the role of universities in achieving these goals, Inuwa said, “Universities are critical stakeholders, and research is the foundation of any robust economy, and we must collaborate to build a technology research ecosystem that addresses national challenges.”

He also stressed the importance of aligning education with industry demands, particular through The Nigerian Start-Up Act, a legal framework that will nurture entrepreneurial ecosystems. With NUC’s guidance, universities can tailor their programmes to equip students with high-demand skills, ensuring they graduate as job creators rather than job seekers.

The DG reiterated the significance of collaboration, according to him, “no one succeeds in isolation. This partnership with NUC is vital for achieving our vision.

“Together, we can prepare our citizens for the future, bridge the digital divide, and position Nigeria as a global talent hub.”

Following the DG’s remarks, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris J. Maiyaki, commended the initiative and affirmed the commission’s commitment to driving digital transformation within Nigeria’s university system.

He emphasised the urgency of integrating digital literacy into the university curriculum, stating that, “the rapidity of change in the digital revolution makes a strong case for the Nigerian university system to be part and parcel of this transformation. Digital literacy is one resource with profound impact; you can hardly function today without significant technological skills.”

While acknowledging the challenges faced by Nigerian universities in terms of digital infrastructure, Maiyaki expressed optimism about the partnership, and reaffirmed his commitment towards its full implementation.

“We are very proud of this initiative. It presents huge potential for our university system to key into the rapidly expanding digital landscape. Using digital platforms to enrich our research ecosystem and exploring the possibilities of artificial intelligence are cross-cutting issues that can transform higher education,” he added.

The National Information Technology Development Agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) with the Cisco System Incorporation to advance Nigeria’s digital transformation. Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) Programme is a global initiative that partners with government and private sector leaders to develop sustainable, secure, and inclusive communities powered by ethical and innovative technology solutions.

The partnership aims to unlock the value of digitalisation in Nigeria and drive an inclusive future. The Federal Government will collaborate with Cisco, industry, and academia to accelerate the national digitisation agenda by implementing pilot projects in five key areas: Repurposing NCAIR to create an AI and Cybersecurity Experience and Incubation Center; Establishing a Broadband Innovation Centre; Setting up a Smart Agriculture Demo Farm; Designing and deploying Technology Learning Hubs; and Incubating Defense Technology Solutions.

This partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s priority areas of accelerating diversification through digitisation and innovation, strengthening national security for peace and prosperity, and boosting agriculture to achieve food security.

Speaking during the signing of the MoU at the NITDA Headquarters, Abuja, the Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE maintained that AI and Cybersecurity go hand in hand, this has made it imperative to upgrade the NCAIR to a world class AI Lab because as “we develop the AI, we also need to develop and design it with a security in mind.

On the second initiative, the NITDA boss noted that broadband is the backbone to digitisation and digital transformation, and it provides the connectivity needed for transformation adding that the establishment of the innovation hub would encourage local startups and companies to come up with affordable broadband solution in Nigeria by using cutting edge technology.

He said, “We have a National Broadband Plan that aims to achieve 95 percent broadband coverage in Nigeria, and we need to be smart in the way we do things in order to achieve the target.”

According to Inuwa, the initiative on smart agriculture would help to improve food production and productivity in agriculture noting that the use of Internet of Things, (IoT), Drones and other technologies would enhance productivity in agriculture.

He said, “As part of the Presidential Redefined Priority Areas of achieving food security in the country, the President has mandated the cultivation of 500,000 acre of land in the country and to achieve this successfully and efficiently, we need to use technology.”

The Director General expressed the willingness of the Agency to work with Cisco to establish a pilot of the Learning Centre adding that it is part of the Agency mandate to deploy IOM technology to the under-served and unserved areas.

He said, “Cisco is already working with International Organisation for Migration, (IOM) for a pilot project in Maiduguri, Borno state capital to deploy three Learning Centers using Cisco technology. So, we want to see how we can partner to also scale up that initiative, because we also have as part of our mandate to deploy this technology in under-served and unserved communities.”

In his remarks, the Cisco’s Country Director, Mr. Clayton Naidoo expressed that Nigeria would benefit from the MoU as it would improve agricultural production, create job opportunities, and increase the financial strength of the citizens.

What we want to do is we want to make sure that we leverage technology to bring the right level of economic opportunity to Nigeria that will contribute towards economic growth and job creation. So that will be the first programme

According to him, Cisco has been unpacking the National Digital Agenda of the country and noted the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan which are in alignment with the Cisco programmes, resources, technology and investment. “And we try to implement pilot projects to ensure that we can help advance the acceleration of that digital plan,” he added.

While reacting to each of the initiatives, Mr. Naidoo disclosed that Cisco is at the vanguard of Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence and will partner with NCAIR to build an experience centre in the country by using the experience.

According to him, the experience center will be designed to support organisations across Nigeria, building robust Cybersecurity and AI architectures which would be done through labs, design thinking rooms, and equipment that can test models.

While noting that Cisco intends to build a world-class experience center that would benefit all parts of Nigeria, the Country Director reiterated that “we are looking to bring the power of the Cisco business unit into the space using technology.”

“This is our immersive video technology using our platform called WebEx, where we can bring the power of those subject matter experts into Nigeria to collaborate and design together, he emphasised.”

He said the company will also build a broadband innovation hub with Galaxy Backbone in partnership with NITDA. He noted that the initiative is in alignment with the National Broadband Policy that was outlined by the Minister. He disclosed that Cisco would work with IXPs and various service providers to help them build networks that can serve underutilised communities or marginalized communities.

“We believe that with the technology that we are going to build, we will leverage the right level of platforms that will ensure that the internet economics are right. Because there is one thing building on technologies but if the technology is too expensive for service providers, they won’t be able to offer that into marginalised communities.”

While assuring that Cisco has an IoT team that builds sensor technology, he said the company will build a use case around smart agriculture using some agricultural bots and drone technology.

He commended the Agency for the partnership disclosing that Cisco is really focused on it. He said the work will start immediately. “We are really looking forward to the partnership and as Cisco, we believe in creating inclusive models that empower local communities and empower all citizens of Nigeria.

The highlight of the event was the visitation to a demo smart farm at the Abuja Technology Village.

TECHDIGEST – Nigeria yesterday formally joined the Cisco Country Acceleration Programme, saying it was to help strengthen the country’s digital transformation agenda.

Cisco’s country Acceleration Programme, CDA was founded in 2015 and has since evolved into programs in 49 countries, with over 1,500 active or completed projects – encompassing over two-thirds of the world’s population and 75 percent of global GDP.

The agreement to join the programme happened in May this year, when Cisco and the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA signed a memorandum of understanding, MoU with the aim to support the nation’s digital transformation agenda and contribute towards digital skills training and development.

However, the manifestation came yesterday, when a leading provider of technology solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, Technology Distributions, TD Africa and Cisco joined forces, to establish a Cisco EDGE Centre in Lagos.

EDGE which stands for “Experience, Design, Go to Market, (GTM) and Earn”, is part of Cisco’s CDA program in Nigeria.

The objective is to share business knowledge to stimulate innovation, help develop small and medium businesses in the digital age, speed up their entry to market and as a result create new jobs for the local economy.

The centre hosts three key functions under one roof. It provides a space where local partners can showcase technologies and host client events; it brings resources and tools to local innovators and entrepreneurs to help them develop more secure, intelligent, and connected solutions; and offers training programs and education in the most advanced digital technologies.

Located at the Tech Experience Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, the hub functions as an incubator, providing small and medium businesses with access to Cisco communication and collaboration technology, alongside training and enablement programs.

It will also help Small micro and medium enterprises, SMMEs to connect with global Cisco experts, who can support them develop business ideas and concepts in a digital world.

The agreement which was signed at the CISCO Networking Academy for Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA) Partner Conference in Paris was sanctioned by the NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE and the Vice President of CISCO Middle East & Africa, Reem Asaad in the presence of other industry stakeholders in the world.

In strengthening the Agency’s efforts in bridging the digital skills gap in the country, the MOU signed between the two organisations is expected to support the nation’s digital transformation agenda and contribute to digital skills training and development.

The CISCO Networking Academy is an IT skill-to-jobs program that ensures collaboration between public-private partnerships in offering digital skills training through high-quality curriculum and inclusive workforce development programmes.

The signed MOU forms part of CISCO’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program, which will ensure that the CISCO Networking Academy program is promoted and expanded to benefit the country and its citizenry.

The strategic collaboration between the two organisations would ensure sustainability to other elements of national digital agenda and create exceptional value for the country, its industries and its citizens.

Inuwa, who was represented by the Agency’s Acting Director, Digital Literacy and Capacity Development Department, Dr. Amina Sambo, said that “by collaborating with industry leaders like CISCO, we can empower and equip Nigerians with the knowledge and resources they need to participate in the national and global digital economies”.

In addition to the various infrastructural and innovative initiatives deployed by NITDA in the country, the MOU would ensure that CISCO deploys initiatives that will enable entrepreneurs in the country to gain new skills, innovate and build customer connections.

The CISCO Incubation and Innovation Centre known as the CISCO Earn, Design, Go to Market, Earn (EDGE) will be used to stimulate innovation and support digitization initiatives thereby providing a space where entrepreneurs in the country can showcase technologies.

It will further provide resources and tools to indigenous innovators and entrepreneurs in the country to help them develop more secure, intelligent and connected solutions.

Expressing her excitement at working with NITDA in accelerating digitisation in Nigeria, Reem asserted that CISCO has a responsibility to its customers and the global community to help them solve challenges impacting lives.

TECHDIGEST – A survey carried out by technology firm, Arravo has revealed that 84 per cent of the workforce sampled preferred to work from home post COVID-19.

The workforce, according to the survey, believes that the new norm brings in flexibility and dynamism to the work system.

Arravo revealed this, when it hosted a forum alongside its partner, Cisco, on ‘Future of Work in Digitised Economy,’ in Lagos.

The forum established that there is a need for organisations to create an intelligent workspace that will enable staff members’ work from distant locations outside of the office, while still contributing to the growth of the organisation.

Chief Executive Officer of Arravo, Ayo Adegboye, who spoke to journalists about the future of work, said: “The focus of the forum is on how to make work much more convenient, seamless and secure for organisations, despite security threats in cyberspace. Today there is a paradigm shift in work space, where people can work remotely from outside of their offices and still contribute meaningfully to the growth of the organisation, and this can be achieved successfully if the right technology is applied.”

Adegboye spoke about Cisco unified communications tool, which he said had been designed to make communication seamless and convenient in a work environment.

According to him, one of the challenges that organisations face is connectivity, which has to do with bandwidth optimisation, adding that working with Cisco as a partner, Arravo has been able to address all of that by optimising bandwidth in the most advanced way such that with a little amount of it (bandwidth), organisations can do a lot more in the area of connectivity.

“Another challenge to the future of work is security and Cisco has invested so much in security in order to address the issue of insecurity and to put the future of work in good perspective. Arravo has always gone ahead of customers to invest in technology that will enhance customers operations in the last 14 years.

“We have maintained our Gold Partner position with Cisco in the last 13 years, which required huge investments in order to ensure the smooth operations of our customers. We have operations across Nigeria and we are expanding outside of Nigeria to meet the needs of our customers that have branches outside Nigeria,” Adegboye said.

In his presentation, the General Manager, Enterprise Business at Arravo, Tola Olaayan, said the survey carried out on future of work after the COVID-19 lockdown, showed that 55 per cent of employee had positive impact on work motivation, 84 per cent preferred working from outside of the office space, 67 per cent saw security as their main challenge, while 40 per cent saw remote working as a challenge.

According to Olaayan, organisations are now adopting cloud technology and Software as a Service in order to save cost and drive efficiency. He said Cisco would continue to offer the best and diverse technology solutions that would enhance the future of work.

TECHDIGEST – The Federal Government has signed an agreement with tech giants, Huawei and CISCO, to establish a minimum of 300 academies in Nigeria and to train about of 30,000 citizens in advanced ICT.

This is even as the country pushes its digital economy through partnerships with various global tech companies.

Earlier this year, the government had also signed an agreement with Microsoft to train 5 million Nigerians, especially in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, who disclosed this said all these are part of the government’s efforts towards achieving the target of attaining 95% digital literacy in the country by 2030.

While delivering a keynote address at the CISCO SAFARI International Conference 2022 organised by National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with CISCO in Abuja, Pantami said: “Of recent, we have had an agreement with Huawei and CISCO to establish a minimum of 300 academies in Nigeria and to train a minimum of 30,000 citizens on advanced training. In addition to this, we have another agreement with Microsoft in which 5 million citizens are going to be trained on ICT, particularly in the area of Artificial Intelligence.”

Speaking on the theme of the conference: ‘Digital Skills in the 4th Industrial Revolution, the Impact on National Development,’ Pantami said digital skills and the 4th Industrial Revolution have been highlighted in the country’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy as key pillars in diversify the economy.

“If you look at our National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy for a digital Nigeria 2020- 2030 which was unveiled by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, on the 28th of November 2019, you will discover that these two components of the theme have been effectively mentioned and captured in the policy under pillars number 2 and 7. Pillar number 2 is digital skills and literacy while pillar number 7 is digital society and emerging technologies”, he noted.

Arguing that the world is already in the 4th Industrial Revolution, Pantami averred that those emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Blockchain Technology among many others have replaced existing computers, worldwide webs and the internet which came around during the 3rd Industrial Revolution.

The conference is an annual event where experts converge on to discuss the progress and achievements of CISCO Academy in mentorship and career development programmes in the country and to strengthen the partnership it has enjoyed with the NITDA over the years.
