TECHDIGEST – The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Chapter, Mr Sam Udekwe, has commended the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for always prioritising the growth and development of journalists especially in the area of amassing digital skills for smooth operation.

Udekwe, who spoke at the end of Digital Journalism and Fact-checking Workshop held in Enugu said NITDA under the Kashifu Inuwa-led management has made journalism the priority of its capacity building initiatives.

He commended Inuwa for periodically helping NUJ leaders to develop the capacity of journalists across the country.
He also commended the Chris Isiguzo-led national leadership of NUJ and the Yushau Shuaib-led Image Merchants Promotion Limited, Publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, for collaborating with NITDA to bring the workshop to Enugu.

Also speaking, chairman of the Enugu correspondent chapel, Mr Lawrence Njoku, commended the NUJ national leadership and IMPR for the initiative, pledging that the participants will make the best use of what they learnt in the course of the training.
Speaking on behalf of female participants, Ngozi Mbah of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) said she and other beneficiaries were leaving the venue enriched with the latest digital tools they were exposed to.
In her remarks, the spokesperson of NITDA, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, who represented the DG, said her agency would sustain the capacity building programme on latest digital tools and skills for mass communication.

She therefore urged the journalists to make the best use of the skills they learnt which were meant to ease their job and also share the knowledge with colleagues who could not attend the session.

TECHDIGEST –The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has continued its push to improve digital awareness and empower Nigerian youths with requisite skills needed for job creations.

And in line with its mandate to accelerate digital transformation agenda, NITDA has commenced capacity development program for artisans and under-served youths in Digital Literacy and Repair of Global System for Mobile Communication, (GSM) phone.

The capacity building, which aimed at addressing mirage of problems confronting the nation especially shortage of skills among large number of our unemployed and underemployed youths would hold in four different states of Gombe, Kogi, Niger and Oyo.

According to a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, head, Corporate Affairs and External Relations, the main purpose of the project is to train youth artisans who already have some skills but need to be empowered with digital skills and ICT tools in order to be competitive in the 21st century digital economy.

A total number of 70 participants per state, drawn from each of the four states, would be trained for five days between January 10th-14th, 2022, to up their skills in modern day technologies of repair of mobile phone, digital skills and handling ICT tools.

This will enable them become competitive in this era of digital economy.

Expectedly, the outcome of capacity building would help to empower artisan youths in enhancing their businesses and earn a higher income; reduce youth unemployment by facilitating the establishment of more businesses; create new startups and more vibrant artisan community while facilitating entrepreneurship growth and youth advancement across the country.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is the apex regulator for Information Technology in Nigeria under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.

The Agency is empowered by Section 6(c) of the NITDA Act, 2007 to develop guidelines for electronic governance and monitor the use of electronic data interchange and other forms of electronic communication transactions in Nigeria.

The Agency issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) as Nigeria’s first comprehensive framework for the protection of personal data.

The NDPR provides the principles and framework for the protection and processing of personal data of Nigerians and residents.

TECHDIGEST – The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Penlight Centre for Investigative Journalism and the Image Merchants Promotion Ltd (IMPR), has commenced a digital training for journalists in Abuja.

The training workshop, according to NITDA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, is part of efforts meant to equip journalists with modern available tools and ethics required to do their jobs better and also serve the country effectively.

Declaring the Workshop open, Hajiya Hadiza admonished the participants to ensure that the knowledge acquired in the course of the training is beneficial to them in particular and the country at large.

She said: “There is no doubting the fact that we are in a digital era where everything is now based on computer and internet. It is therefore of interest to us at NITDA for our journalists to take advantage of avaible digital tools to do their jobs effectively and serve the country better.”

She however added that: “The digital era has however come with its challenges, one of which is the overbearing presence of social media. Of course the unregulated social media is a free market place where anything and everything goes – fake news, toxic contents, hate speech and inciting narratives – because there are no gate keepers to direct the traffic. The theme of this Workshop which emphasizes ethical reporting and the use of digital tools to detect fake news, is therefore very apt and timely.”

The chief executive officer of IMPR, the Publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, Mr. Yushau Shuaib, eulogised the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami and the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, for their unrelenting effort in bridging the digital divide across the country.

While encouraging the participants to pay attention to every detail they are taught, he expressed optimism that the outcome of the training would be impactful and beneficial to the participants.
