The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has renewed its call for stronger collaboration among government institutions, industry players, academia and technology professionals to accelerate digital innovation and position Nigeria for inclusive economic growth.

The Agency made the call at the 20th Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) International Conference 2026 held in Jos, Plateau State, where stakeholders gathered to explore how emerging technologies can be harnessed to drive governance reforms, job creation and national competitiveness.

Representing the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Agency’s Director of Stakeholders Management and Partnerships, Aristotle Onumo, said Nigeria’s digital future depends on sustained investments in innovation, digital skills development, research and strategic partnerships capable of delivering measurable socio-economic impact.

According to him, NITDA remains committed to implementing its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan through initiatives that promote digital literacy, research and development, emerging technologies, cyber sovereignty and innovation-driven ecosystems aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital economy.

He added that the Agency is expanding opportunities for innovators, entrepreneurs and technology startups by creating platforms that encourage collaboration, investment and knowledge sharing across the country’s digital ecosystem.

“We are transforming Digital Nigeria into the nation’s foremost innovation platform where policymakers, investors, startups, researchers and technology companies can collaborate to accelerate economic growth and digital transformation,” he said.

Inuwa also encouraged innovators and startup founders to leverage the forthcoming Builders Summit as a platform to showcase indigenous technology solutions capable of addressing Nigeria’s critical development challenges.

Declaring the conference open, Caleb Mutfwang described digital technology as an indispensable driver of modern governance and economic development.

He said the Plateau State Government has embraced digital solutions to improve public service delivery, boost internally generated revenue and modernise government operations.

The governor further noted that technology would play a critical role in transforming agriculture, increasing productivity and strengthening food security, urging participants to ensure that discussions at the conference translate into practical solutions that would benefit the nation.

Earlier, President of the Nigeria Computer Society, Muhammad Sirajo, said the annual conference was designed to foster collaboration among policymakers, researchers, regulators and industry leaders on strategies for deploying emerging technologies to drive national development.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Harnessing Digital Innovation and Emerging Technologies for Inclusive Growth and Economic Renaissance (RISE 2026),” Sirajo identified artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, cybersecurity and robotics as transformative technologies shaping the future of global economies.

He stressed that Nigeria’s youthful population and expanding digital ecosystem present a unique opportunity to build a globally competitive economy, provided investments in innovation, digital infrastructure and skills development remain national priorities.

The conference brought together government officials, regulators, technology professionals, academics, development partners and private-sector leaders to deliberate on policies, innovations and collaborative strategies expected to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation and drive inclusive economic renaissance.

‎By Agabi Chubiyojo Charis,

‎There is an argument that gadgets ranging from mobile phones, laptops, smart watches among other take longer to arrive Nigeria. While others have argued against, this should not be dismissed totally because arrival of cutting-edge technology is frequently hindered by complex customs protocols, logistical bottlenecks, and volatile economic conditions.

‎While the global market moves at the speed of light, the journey to a Nigerian stores is often a marathon of administrative red tape and infrastructure hurdles. From the moment a device leaves a factory floor to the second it lands in a consumer’s hands, several critical friction points dictate a timeline that is often measured in weeks rathe than days.

‎Key Reasons for Delays in Nigeria:

‎1. Customs Delays and Inspections: The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) often holds packages for physical inspections and documentation verification, a process that typically adds 3 to 10 days (or more) to the delivery window.

‎2. Logistics and Shipping Consolidation: International shippers frequently wait to consolidate enough volume to fill a cargo container or pallet. This pre-shipment sorting phase can take on an extra 3 to 4 days.

‎3. Foreign Exchange (FX) Instability: The rapid depreciation of the Naira creates a nightmare for retailers. If the exchange rate spikes between the time an order is placed and the time it hits the border, importers often face a funding gap, delaying the release of goods until additional capital is secured.

‎4. Flight and Freight Schedules: Dependence on commercial international airline schedules means that even ready-to-ship items may sit in a warehouse for 3 to 5 days awaiting the next available flight to Lagos or Abuja.

‎‎5. Port and Terminal Congestion: Once the plane touches down, the cargo enters a secondary bottleneck. Congestion at airport terminals and sorting facilities leads to significant delays in offloading and internal handling.

‎6. Dangerous Goods Requirements: Because most modern gadgets contain lithium-ion batteries, they are flagged as”Dangerous Goods.” This classification demands specialized permits, specific packaging, and restrictive airline space, all of which lengthen the transit time.

‎Excluding formal logistics, another significant factor is the prevalence of the “Gray Market” and informal shipping routes. Many high-demand gadgets enter Nigeria via individual resellers or small-scale importers who bypass official brand distributorship to avoid high corporate taxes.

‎‎While these shippers might offer lower prices, they lack the priority clearance of major tech giants like Apple or Samsung. These smaller players often rely on indirect routing, shipping items first to hubs like Dubai or the UK before forwarding them to Nigeria, which inadvertently doubles the transit time and increases the risk of the product being caught in transit backlogs.

Nigeria recorded a major triumph on the continental public relations stage as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) clinched Gold in the Crisis/Issues Management category at the 2026 Africa SABRE Awards, while the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) emerged as a finalist for CEO of the Year.

The NDLEA’s winning entry, the “War Against Drug Abuse” campaign under the chairmanship of Brig Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd) was adjudged the continent’s best crisis management initiative by an international jury. The campaign was executed by Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR) and praised for its strategic clarity, sustained public engagement, and effectiveness in reshaping public perception during a sensitive national security period.

Judges noted that the campaign demonstrated how coordinated, evidence-based communication can strengthen public trust while confronting complex social threats such as drug trafficking and abuse.

In another significant recognition for Nigeria’s public institutions, the Nigeria Customs Service was shortlisted in the highly competitive CEO of the Year category for the “Impactful PR in Customs Service” campaign.

The nomination spotlights the communication-driven leadership of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Customs, whose reform-focused messaging has been central to repositioning the Service’s public image and operational transparency.

Both the NDLEA and Nigeria Customs Service public relations campaigns were executed in strategic partnership with IMPR, the multi-award-winning parent company of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential, and Spokespersons Digest.

Other finalists in the CEO of the Year category include Vodacom’s CEO for the “Beyond the Headlines” campaign, executed with WE Communications, and Harry Scherzer, CEO of Future Forex, for a campaign managed by Irvine Partners.

The 2026 SABRE Africa shortlist—recognising Superior Achievement in Branding, Reputation and Engagement—was strongly dominated by Nigerian agencies and campaigns.

Leading the field was Chain Reactions Africa, which secured the highest number of nominations across categories. Other prominent organisations on the shortlist include Vodacom, KFC Africa, and The Walt Disney Company Africa.

Out of more than 500 entries submitted across Africa, only about 120 finalists made the final shortlist, reflecting the growing sophistication of crisis management, digital storytelling and purpose-driven communication on the continent.

The prestigious Diamond SABRE categories highlighted excellence across both the corporate and public sectors.

In the Company of the Year category, KFC Africa and Guinness Nigeria, in partnership with Chain Reactions Africa, emerged as leading contenders for redefining brand purpose and cultural relevance.

Regional categories further highlighted standout African brands and institutions.
In Northern Africa, GITEX Africa Morocco 2025, managed by APO Group, won for its technology-driven media engagement, while the African Development Bank Group claimed the Global Campaign award for “AFAWA: Banking on Women.”

In Western Africa, Nigerian campaigns dominated the shortlist, led by the Lagos State Government for climate action communications and Indomie for its “Show Some Love To Mum” campaign.

Beyond NDLEA’s gold win, Nigeria’s public sector featured prominently across categories. The Presidency of Nigeria earned a finalist position in the Public Sector category for the “From Promises To Proofs” campaign, also managed by Chain Reactions Africa, highlighting a shift toward evidence-based governance communication.

The shortlist also reflected Africa’s expanding digital creativity. The Walt Disney Company Africa secured multiple nominations for “The Disney Dream Room” and “ESPN on Disney,” while Spotify and Microsoft were recognised for campaigns centred on Afrobeats culture and AI-driven economic development.

Winners across all categories will be unveiled at the Africa SABRE Awards Gala on March 17, 2026, at The Venue Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

This year’s edition marks a milestone as PRovoke Media partners with the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) to host the awards alongside PRCA’s South Africa conference.

“The quality of work this year shows that African agencies are no longer merely following global trends—they are defining them,” a jury spokesperson said.

For agencies such as Image Merchants Promotion Limited and Chain Reactions Africa, the 2026 SABRE recognitions further affirm Nigeria’s growing strategic influence within the global public relations and communications industry.

Wong praised Nigeria’s role in the recent World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaty protecting genetic resources and traditional knowledge.

Delivering his welcome address, the NCS President, Dr. Muhammad Sirajo, said the conference would serve as a platform for IT professionals to address critical issues, including intelligent systems, fintech, sustainable energy, and innovations in agriculture, health, education, and national planning.

“This conference will provide an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss recent innovations, trends, and solutions for improving technological systems,” Sirajo said.

The week-long event includes plenary sessions, a doctoral consortium, a youth and entrepreneurship forum, the Fellows Forum, the Annual General Meeting, an IT quiz competition for students, and an induction ceremony for new members.

Nigeria Customs and the Future Shaped by Technology

By Abdulsalam Mahmud,

It is already a statement of fact that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) deploys technology for most of its operations. From trade facilitation to border surveillance, the agency continues to embrace innovation to enhance efficiency, security and economic growth.

Last year, the NCS launched B’Odogwu, an indigenous digital trade facilitation and cargo processing system designed to optimize cargo clearance, compliance and revenue collection. B’Odogwu, which serves as a Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), integrates artificial intelligence, blockchain and data analytics to improve trade efficiency.

With features that support real-time tracking, automated risk assessment and electronic documentation, the platform significantly reduces delays and curbs fraudulent activities within Nigeria’s import and export ecosystem.

By minimizing human interference and ensuring accurate valuation of imports, B’Odogwu has become instrumental in plugging revenue leakages and streamlining port operations. One of its biggest advantages is its role in enhancing transparency and reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks in cargo clearance.

Previously, importers and clearing agents faced lengthy processing times, often leading to congestion at the ports. However, with B’Odogwu’s automation capabilities, customs procedures have become faster and more predictable, leading to improved trade facilitation.

Additionally, the system strengthens national security by providing better monitoring of goods entering and leaving the country, thereby reducing smuggling and other illicit trade practices. The transformative impact of technology in customs operations is evident in many countries that have embraced digital solutions to optimize trade facilitation and security enforcement.

Singapore, for instance, operates one of the most advanced customs systems globally through its TradeNet platform. This single-window system streamlines customs clearance by integrating various regulatory agencies into one digital framework, enabling businesses to complete import and export documentation seamlessly.

By significantly reducing processing time, TradeNet has enhanced Singapore’s reputation as a global logistics hub, ensuring efficiency and transparency in its trade operations. Similarly, the United States’ Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has leveraged non-intrusive inspection (NII) technology, including X-ray and gamma-ray scanners, to improve cargo screening at ports of entry.

This technology allows customs officers to detect contraband, weapons and undeclared goods without the need for manual inspections, thus expediting clearance while strengthening security. The deployment of the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) has also revolutionized trade processing by automating import and export transactions, reducing paperwork.and enhancing compliance monitoring.

These digital innovations have not only bolstered revenue collection, but have also played a critical role in securing the US supply chain against threats. Across Africa, Rwanda has made remarkable strides in leveraging digital tools to enhance customs efficiency.

The Rwanda Electronic Single Window (ReSW) integrates various trade-related services, allowing for the swift processing of permits, customs declarations and payments online. The system has slashed clearance times at borders, reduced corruption by minimizing human intervention and increased government revenue collection.

These global examples reinforce the fact that a technology-driven customs service is essential for fostering economic growth, strengthening border security and aligning national trade policies with international best practices. Beyond facilitating trade, the Nigeria Customs is also deploying advanced technology to bolster national security.

This was reaffirmed by its Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, during a courtesy visit to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday. At the meeting, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the Service’s commitment to integrating geospatial technology to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement across Nigeria’s land and maritime borders.

“Technology remains the key to effective border management in today’s rapidly evolving security landscape. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to deploying geospatial technology and other innovative tools to enhance our surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement capabilities.

“These efforts are designed to align with international best practices while addressing Nigeria’s unique border security challenges,” he said. Adeniyi further explained that these technology-driven initiatives would not only strengthen the nation’s ability to curb illicit trade, but also facilitate seamless, legitimate cross-border transactions.

This aligns with the NCS’ broader strategy of modernizing its operations through digital transformation, ensuring trade efficiency and enhanced security through cutting-edge innovations. In response, NSA Ribadu commended the Nigeria Customs for its proactive approach, noting that technology is indispensable in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“The Customs Service has demonstrated a commendable commitment to modernisation and efficiency in securing our borders. Integrating advanced technology into border management is a step in the right direction and aligns perfectly with our broader national security objectives,” Ribadu said.

While the meeting reiterated the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling security threats and ensuring national stability, the NSA assured Adeniyi of continued support for the Nigeria Customs’ modernization agenda.

He also emphasized the need for synergy in intelligence sharing and operational coordination. From trade facilitation to border security, the NCS is proving that technology is at the heart of modern customs administration.

Whether through B’Odogwu’s automation of trade processes or geospatial technology’s enhancement of surveillance operations, the Bashir Adeniyi-led NCS remains steadfast in its mission to protect Nigeria’s economy and national security through innovative, technology-driven solutions.

The integration of advanced digital tools has not only improved efficiency within the Customs Service but has also reinforced the agency’s commitment to global best practices. This shift is particularly significant in a country where delays and inefficiencies have historically hampered economic growth.

Moreover, the use of technology in border security provides the NCS with better intelligence-gathering capabilities, enabling officers to track illicit trade activities in real time. This proactive approach will lead to a decline in smuggling incidents and a stronger regulatory framework that protects Nigeria’s economic interests.

As threats to national security evolve, Nigeria Customs’ investment in surveillance technology will ensure that the country’s borders remain well-monitored and secure. In an era where technology dictates the strength of nations, only a digitally-fortified Customs Service can safeguard Nigeria’s economic and security interests.

Stakeholders recommend AI policy for skills development

Stakeholders in the technology sector stressed the need for the government at all levels to establish an Artificial Intelligence policy in education that will promote innovation and digital skills development among students.

They made this disclosure at the recent Technology Enhanced Learning/Computing Education Forum organised by the Nigeria Computer Society in Lagos.

An Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Kano State University of Science and Technology, Dr Salisu Abdulrahman, said policy on AI would support the establishment of AI infrastructure in tertiary institutions across the country and also facilitate AI development in Nigeria.

Abdulrahman underscored the importance of collaboration between AI stakeholders and academia to drive innovation and contribute to national growth.

He emphasised the necessity for Nigeria to establish an AI database that could support research and innovation initiatives.

Defining AI as the machine’s ability to emulate human thinking and exhibit intelligence, Abdulrahman highlighted the global investments, totaling billions of dollars, directed towards advancing AI development to unlock global value.

“So many platforms have integrated AI into their operations, and different sectors of the global economy have embraced AI, including the education sector. AI can be used in automated processes and the development of robots.

“Although AI is in its infancy stage in Nigeria, most ministries and government agencies, including private organisations are beginning to introduce AI in their operations.

“The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy as well as the National Information Technology Development Agency has developed policies and strategies to develop AI in Nigeria,” Abdulrahman said.

He further explained that the application of AI could stimulate economic growth by simulating games from both the supply and demand sides.

He added that the Federal Government was committing funds to startups to develop AI in Nigeria.

Abdulrahman remarked that Nigeria needed technical skills development in machine language, big data, robotics, and deep learning, as well as data science skills for the understanding of data processing and data analytics for decision-making.

He said Nigerians must acquire skills in the area of generative AI and responsible AI, adding that Nigerians would need the knowledge of AI in critical thinking and decision-making.

He insisted that apart from the technical skills, Nigerians must also acquire soft skills in AI.

“However, the biggest challenge to AI development in Nigeria is lack of funding. Organisations and government agencies must, therefore, invest heavily in AI in order to enhance research and development in the country’s educational system,” Abdulrahman added.

A Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Applications, University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Prof. Abejide Ade-Ibijola, said AI in education would support learning and innovation in the area of intelligent thinking, automated grading, data analytics, predictive analysis and content generation, using algorithms.

He, however, said AI could come with its disadvantages such as funding, insecurity and training, describing them as timeless challenges.

The President of NCS, Dr Muhammad Aliyu, stated that the forum was specifically crafted to unite stakeholders and delve into the influence of Artificial Intelligence in education.

“The primary focus is on how the education sector can harness AI to foster innovation and propel advanced research, ultimately benefiting Nigeria as a nation,” Aliyu said.

He highlighted that this year’s conference theme revolves around emerging technologies, particularly AI, to promote innovation and excellence within the academic community.

Nigeria’s Digital Identity Programme Should Be Reviewed – NCS

TECHDIGEST – The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has called for a review of the country’s digital identity programme spearheaded by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

This is part of recommendations in a communiqué released at the end of NCS’ 51st International Conference held in Ogun State recently, themed: ‘Smart, Secure and Sustainable Nation (S3N2022)’.

Participants at the conference agreed that reviewing the national digital identity programme would enable the government and critical stakeholders to further enrich all the associated development goals of the programme.

“More efforts should be geared towards strengthening the digital identity programme,” the communiqué reads as signed by Professor Adesina Sodiya and Mr. Ayodeji Rex Abitogun; the President and the Chairman Conferences Committee of NCS, respectively.

“NIMC must improve on the level of implementation of the digital identity management programme by upgrading the digital infrastructure capacity to allow for seamless registration and integration of identity data”, the conference advised.

The conference attendees also believe that government and corporate bodies should provide more support to information technology professionals to acquire the requisite training and expertise needed to effectively implement smart cities and sustainable economies.

Therefore, they recommended that “Government should create a suitable environment for learning, research, and development, with synergy among stakeholders in achieving a framework for a smart, secure and sustainable nation”.

Similarly, discussions at the NCS International Conference centered on a need for Professor Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, to develop a policy which guarantees that only experienced ICT professionals (who have regularized their practice), are appointed as substantive Ministers for the Ministry, adding that the qualifications and skills of the leadership of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and other IT intense agencies are critical to the nation’s rapid economic growth.

“IT professionals (who are members of NCS and CPN) should always be recommended as Chief Executives of such agencies of government.

“All stakeholders; NCS, NITDA, CPN, and others, should deliberately educate the general populace on the need to be security conscious on the Internet”.

With reference to physical security of the nation, NCS also stressed its readiness to partner with relevant government bodies in developing and training personnel on intelligent technologies needed to tackle insecurity in the country.
