TikTok Access Disrupted Across Northern Nigeria as Users Turn to VPNs

TikTok users across parts of Northern Nigeria have been experiencing persistent difficulty accessing the popular short-form video platform since Monday, with many resorting to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to bypass the disruption, a Tech Digest investigation has found.
Checks and accounts obtained by Tech Digest from users in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and other parts of the region indicate that the platform either fails to load or becomes largely unusable on regular mobile data connections.
Users described feeds freezing midway through scrolling, videos failing to load and uploads repeatedly stalling. In several cases, however, normal access was restored almost immediately after users activated VPN services.
The consistency of the complaints across different locations has raised questions about whether the disruption is the result of a technical or network-routing problem, or some form of access restriction.
In Sokoto State, Ameenu Ahmed told Tech Digest that he had been unable to use TikTok normally since Monday.
“Yes, we have been unable to access TikTok since Monday. I had to use a VPN before it worked. This is what a lot of us are using,” Ahmed said.
Users in Kaduna reported a similar pattern.
“Since Monday, TikTok has not been opening on my phone unless I turn on a VPN. At first, I thought it was my data, but my friends here in Kaduna are complaining about the same thing,” Yunusa Muhammad told Tech Digest.
Another Kaduna resident, Aisha Sani, said the problem persisted even when other internet services were functioning normally.
“In my area here in Kaduna, TikTok stopped working directly. You will just keep scrolling and nothing loads. It only works when I connect with a VPN,” she said.
Some users also reported difficulties accessing TikTok through its mobile web version, suggesting that the disruption may not be limited to the app itself.
The problem, which users said began abruptly on Monday, has continued for several days, although the severity appears to vary depending on location and internet connection.
As of the time of filing this report, Tech Digest had found no public announcement from Nigerian regulators or telecommunications operators confirming that access to TikTok had been restricted in the affected areas.
There has also been no official explanation establishing whether the disruption is the result of a technical fault, network configuration, traffic-management measure or deliberate restriction.
The absence of an official explanation has fuelled speculation among affected users, particularly because VPN connections appear to restore access in many reported cases.
Technically, successful access through a VPN can indicate that changing the route through which internet traffic travels is bypassing whatever is interfering with the original connection. It does not, however, establish on its own that authorities or telecommunications companies have deliberately blocked the platform.
The geographical concentration of the complaints is also significant. Accounts obtained by Tech Digest suggest the disruption is not affecting all Nigerian TikTok users uniformly.
The incident therefore does not, on the evidence currently available, appear to constitute a nationwide TikTok shutdown. Nor is there sufficient evidence to conclude that TikTok itself is experiencing a general service failure.
For users in the affected areas, however, the practical effect remains the same: direct access is unreliable while VPN connections frequently restore functionality.
TikTok has become a major digital platform for entertainment, news, political discussion, advertising and small businesses in Nigeria, meaning prolonged disruption could affect not only ordinary users but also creators and entrepreneurs who depend on the platform to reach audiences and customers.
The central question is now what is causing the disruption.
Without clarification from TikTok, telecommunications operators or relevant Nigerian regulatory authorities, it remains impossible to determine conclusively whether users are experiencing an infrastructure or routing failure, network-level interference, or a deliberate restriction.
For affected users, those possibilities can look virtually identical on their screens.
Tech Digest will continue to seek clarification from relevant authorities, telecommunications operators and TikTok on the cause and scope of the disruption.
