YouTube has launched a new private messaging feature, allowing users to share videos and chat directly within the platform.
The feature is rolling out to users aged 18 and above in the United States and selected international markets, marking the return of private conversations on YouTube after the company discontinued its original messaging system in 2019.
According to YouTube, the new messaging experience was developed following positive feedback from tests conducted in late 2025, which showed strong user demand for easier ways to share content without switching to other apps.
Unlike the previous version, the new system incorporates additional safety measures. Users must verify their age before gaining access, while conversations can only begin after an invitation link is shared through a third-party messaging platform.
The feature is accessible through a new “Messages” tab located in the top-right corner of the YouTube app. Once connected, users can exchange messages and share videos directly within the platform.
YouTube said the invite-only approach is intended to encourage communication among friends and family rather than create a broader social networking environment.
The company added that all conversations will remain subject to its existing community guidelines and moderation policies.
