The Federal Government has called for a decisive shift from examination-focused education to skills-based, lifelong learning as Nigeria positions its youth for the future of work.

The call was made by the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, at a gathering of Cisco Networking Academy instructors in Abuja.

Kashifu illustrated the point with his personal story, recalling how after his NYSC in 2003 he was stuck moving files in a government company.

“When I asked to build a website for the organisation, I was told there was no budget. I offered to pay for the domain and hosting from my NYSC allowance. I built the site, included my contact details, and was soon hired by another company that paid me $1,500 in 2004. From that moment, I never struggled for work again,” he recounted.

He warned that the world of work is changing fast, noting that more than 60 per cent of today’s jobs did not exist 60 years ago.

“According to the World Economic Forum, the world could see about 170 million new jobs by 2030 while roughly 92 million roles may disappear. Technology will not simply replace people; it will transform how work is done,” he said.

He added that by 2030, nearly 39 per cent of tasks will demand different abilities, stressing that “Artificial Intelligence can already write code more efficiently than many humans, so the focus must shift to critical thinking and problem-solving.”

“Passing an exam is one thing, but critical thinking, complex problem-solving and the ability to adapt are the most important skills,” he said, urging instructors to teach competence, not just how to pass tests.

He praised President Tinubu’s appointment of Alausa, saying he has advanced reforms sought for over two decades, including a new digital skills curriculum for primary and secondary schools and integration of digital literacy into university general studies.

“Nigeria’s greatest resource is not its minerals but its human capital,” Abdullahi said, noting that Cisco Academies now operate in almost all federal universities and number over 369 nationwide.

Minister Alausa reinforced the message, declaring: “What we are doing now is not just teaching to learn. It is teaching to work.”

He said government is prioritising STEMM, TVET and digital literacy, stressing that technology is changing how people learn and work and that girls, persons with disabilities and rural learners must have equal access.

He disclosed that with the NCC, government has secured zero-rated data for learning platforms like Learning Passport and called for expansion of Cisco Academies to colleges of education and technical colleges, urging youths to “seize the opportunity… and use your skills to solve real problems in your communities.”

TikTok users across parts of Northern Nigeria have been experiencing persistent difficulty accessing the popular short-form video platform since Monday, with many resorting to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to bypass the disruption, a Tech Digest investigation has found.

Checks and accounts obtained by Tech Digest from users in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and other parts of the region indicate that the platform either fails to load or becomes largely unusable on regular mobile data connections.

Users described feeds freezing midway through scrolling, videos failing to load and uploads repeatedly stalling. In several cases, however, normal access was restored almost immediately after users activated VPN services.

The consistency of the complaints across different locations has raised questions about whether the disruption is the result of a technical or network-routing problem, or some form of access restriction.

In Sokoto State, Ameenu Ahmed told Tech Digest that he had been unable to use TikTok normally since Monday.

“Yes, we have been unable to access TikTok since Monday. I had to use a VPN before it worked. This is what a lot of us are using,” Ahmed said.

Users in Kaduna reported a similar pattern.

“Since Monday, TikTok has not been opening on my phone unless I turn on a VPN. At first, I thought it was my data, but my friends here in Kaduna are complaining about the same thing,” Yunusa Muhammad told Tech Digest.

Another Kaduna resident, Aisha Sani, said the problem persisted even when other internet services were functioning normally.

“In my area here in Kaduna, TikTok stopped working directly. You will just keep scrolling and nothing loads. It only works when I connect with a VPN,” she said.

Some users also reported difficulties accessing TikTok through its mobile web version, suggesting that the disruption may not be limited to the app itself.

The problem, which users said began abruptly on Monday, has continued for several days, although the severity appears to vary depending on location and internet connection.

As of the time of filing this report, Tech Digest had found no public announcement from Nigerian regulators or telecommunications operators confirming that access to TikTok had been restricted in the affected areas.

There has also been no official explanation establishing whether the disruption is the result of a technical fault, network configuration, traffic-management measure or deliberate restriction.

The absence of an official explanation has fuelled speculation among affected users, particularly because VPN connections appear to restore access in many reported cases.

Technically, successful access through a VPN can indicate that changing the route through which internet traffic travels is bypassing whatever is interfering with the original connection. It does not, however, establish on its own that authorities or telecommunications companies have deliberately blocked the platform.

The geographical concentration of the complaints is also significant. Accounts obtained by Tech Digest suggest the disruption is not affecting all Nigerian TikTok users uniformly.

The incident therefore does not, on the evidence currently available, appear to constitute a nationwide TikTok shutdown. Nor is there sufficient evidence to conclude that TikTok itself is experiencing a general service failure.

For users in the affected areas, however, the practical effect remains the same: direct access is unreliable while VPN connections frequently restore functionality.

TikTok has become a major digital platform for entertainment, news, political discussion, advertising and small businesses in Nigeria, meaning prolonged disruption could affect not only ordinary users but also creators and entrepreneurs who depend on the platform to reach audiences and customers.

The central question is now what is causing the disruption.

Without clarification from TikTok, telecommunications operators or relevant Nigerian regulatory authorities, it remains impossible to determine conclusively whether users are experiencing an infrastructure or routing failure, network-level interference, or a deliberate restriction.

For affected users, those possibilities can look virtually identical on their screens.

Tech Digest will continue to seek clarification from relevant authorities, telecommunications operators and TikTok on the cause and scope of the disruption.

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, reigniting one of the most entertaining rivalries in consumer technology.

The company’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, has attracted considerable attention from smartphone enthusiasts who have long watched Samsung develop its Galaxy Z Fold series. With a book-style design, a large internal display and a premium price tag, the Duo appears ready to challenge Samsung’s latest offering, the Galaxy Z Fold8.

However, Apple’s arrival raises an important question: has the company introduced a genuinely different foldable experience, or has it simply refined a design Samsung has spent years developing?

Both phones follow the book-style foldable design. When closed, they function as conventional smartphones. When opened, they reveal a larger screen suitable for reading, watching videos, multitasking and productivity.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a slightly larger 5.5-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. Both internal displays support a 120Hz refresh rate and offer peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.

The similarities, however, end quickly.

Apple has equipped the Duo with a nano-textured, anti-reflective display designed to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable. Samsung uses a glossy display with anti-reflective treatment. Early impressions suggest that Apple’s crease is particularly difficult to see, although long-term testing will be necessary to determine whether this advantage survives months of use.

Apple has also introduced Apple Pencil support, giving the Duo an advantage for users interested in handwriting, sketching and digital note-taking. The Galaxy Z Fold8, in contrast, does not support Samsung’s S Pen.

The differences between the two devices become clearer when their specifications are considered in detail. The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Both processors are designed to handle demanding applications, gaming and multitasking, although real-world performance will depend on software optimisation and independent testing.

In terms of cameras, the iPhone Duo reportedly features a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. The Galaxy Z Fold8 offers a 50MP main camera alongside an ultra-wide camera. Although Samsung’s main camera has a higher megapixel count, that does not automatically make it superior. Image processing, sensor quality, stabilisation and software also influence the quality of photographs and videos.

Apple’s experience with computational photography, video processing and colour management could make the Duo a strong competitor for content creators. Samsung, however, has an established reputation for versatile camera systems and advanced video capabilities.

The two phones also differ in their physical dimensions. The iPhone Duo weighs 254g, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201g, making Samsung’s device considerably lighter. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is approximately 8.9mm thick when folded, compared with the Duo’s reported 11.3mm. These differences could matter to users who carry their phones throughout the day.

The iPhone Duo reportedly supports up to 2TB of storage, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 offers up to 1TB. For users who regularly record high-resolution videos, store large files or use their phones for professional work, the additional storage on Apple’s device could be attractive.

Battery capacity and charging are also important considerations. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a reported 4,800mAh battery and supports wired charging of up to 45W. Apple’s battery capacity has not been publicly confirmed, although the company’s power-management technology could influence the Duo’s battery performance. The iPhone also supports MagSafe and wired charging.

Durability is another important consideration. Apple gives the Duo an IP68 rating, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 carries an IP48 rating. The difference suggests that the iPhone has stronger protection against dust and water, although neither rating makes a foldable immune to damage. The durability of the hinges, flexible displays and folding mechanisms will ultimately require extensive real-world testing.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899 in the United States. This gives Apple’s first foldable a $100 premium over Samsung’s latest model.

That difference may appear modest within the luxury smartphone market, but the final cost could be considerably higher in countries such as Nigeria, where exchange-rate movements, import duties, shipping costs, retailer margins and taxes influence smartphone prices.

For Nigerian consumers, the price difference could become more significant if the naira weakens against the dollar or if import-related costs increase. A phone priced at $1,999 could therefore become considerably more expensive locally than its advertised US price. Buyers may also have to consider the cost of repairs, replacement parts and specialist servicing, which can be more expensive for foldable devices.

Apple’s premium could also increase demand for older iPhone models, particularly if consumers who prefer the company’s ecosystem decide to upgrade. Samsung, on the other hand, may respond with discounts, trade-in offers or promotional bundles to retain customers.

The larger question is whether consumers will pay more for Apple’s first-generation foldable when Samsung already offers an eighth-generation alternative.

Apple’s announcement has also reignited the familiar rivalry between iPhone and Samsung enthusiasts. Technology commentators and creators, including Marques Brownlee, Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything and Parker Burton, have become part of the wider conversation surrounding foldable phones. Their reviews, comparisons and technical discussions help audiences examine the devices beyond marketing claims.

Brownlee’s long-standing influence in smartphone reviews, Nelson’s reputation for durability testing and the broader online technology community have made foldable-phone comparisons especially popular.

Social media has added another dimension to the rivalry. Samsung supporters have questioned whether Apple’s entry represents genuine innovation, while Apple supporters argue that the company has taken time to refine the technology before entering the market.

Samsung has also joined the conversation by mocking Apple’s foldable phone on social media, accusing the company of recycling an idea that Samsung had already developed. The exchange illustrates how smartphone competition has become more than a contest over specifications; it is also a battle over brand loyalty, identity and technological leadership.

The iPhone Duo brings Apple’s ecosystem, a new processor, Apple Pencil compatibility, a reportedly subtle crease and stronger water and dust resistance. It could appeal to users who want a foldable phone that doubles as a tablet while remaining integrated with their existing Apple devices.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 offers a lighter body, a lower starting price, a mature foldable design and Android’s flexibility. Samsung’s experience could also make it a safer choice for consumers concerned about the risks associated with a first-generation product.

Ultimately, the better phone depends on what the user values most. Apple’s premium may be justified for those who prioritise its ecosystem and software experience. Samsung may offer better value for users who want a refined foldable without paying the additional cost of Apple’s debut.

Artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude have become household names. They write emails, answer questions and generate content at impressive speed. But despite the hype, these tools all share a major limitation: they don’t actually understand how the real world works.

What they do is predict words, now a new class of AI is emerging that could change everything. They’re called world models, and according to researchers and industry leaders, they may become one of the most talked-about technologies before the end of the year.

Traditional AI models learn by consuming massive amounts of text books, articles, websites and social media posts. From this, they learn statistical patterns that allow them to predict what word or sentence should come next. That’s why a chatbot can accurately describe what happens when a coffee cup falls off a table: gravity pulls it down, the coffee spills and the cup might break. But the AI doesn’t understand gravity. It has never seen an object fall or collide with the ground. It’s simply repeating patterns it has seen in text.

World models work differently. Instead of learning primarily from text, they are trained on videos, images and simulations, allowing them to understand 3D space, motion, cause and effect, and physical interactions. Rather than predicting the next word, they predict what happens next in the real world. A common analogy used by researchers is this: Text-based AI reads the driver’s manual. World models actually get behind the wheel.

The world’s largest AI companies are now investing heavily in world models.

Google recently unveiled Genie 3, a system capable of generating interactive 3D environments from a single image. Runway, another AI company, launched a world-model-based system that is already being used in Hollywood to generate realistic video scenes.

OpenAI is reportedly working on a successor to its video model, internally referred to as Sora 2, designed to simulate complex physical environments and behaviours.

Yann LeCun, one of the pioneers of modern AI and a Turing Award winner. He recently left his role at Meta to launch a new startup focused entirely on world models, called Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI Labs). According to reports, the company attracted as much as $5 billion in funding before releasing a product.

Industry experts believe world models could be the key to making AI truly useful beyond screens and chat boxes.

Robots powered by world models could operate safely in unpredictable environments, such as warehouses, hospitals and homes. Self-driving cars could better understand complex situations like school zones or busy intersections.

Tesla has been quietly training its own world models using billions of miles of driving footage. Robotics company Figure AI is applying similar technology to humanoid robots designed to work alongside humans without causing damage.

Even smartphones could soon benefit. With embedded world models, a phone camera might not just identify a leaking pipe, but guide a user step by step through fixing it because the AI understands how plumbing systems actually work.

For years, AI progress has focused on language: chatbots that talk, write and explain. World models represent a shift toward AI that acts systems that can reason about the physical world and interact with it safely.

As competition intensifies and products begin to ship, analysts expect world models to move quickly from research labs into consumer devices, robots and vehicles.

If current trends continue, “world models” may soon be as familiar a term as “chatbot” or “generative AI.” And when that happens, the conversation around artificial intelligence may change for good.

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on African nations to take an active role in the global artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, warning that the continent cannot afford to be left behind as in previous industrial eras.

Speaking at the opening of GITEX Africa 2025 in Nigeria, the DG said AI offers Africa the opportunity to leapfrog development and drive exponential economic growth. He noted that global estimates show AI could boost the world economy by up to 20% within the next five years, but stressed that Africa must invest in human capital, infrastructure, and innovation to benefit.

He highlighted Nigeria’s initiatives such as nationwide digital literacy programs, partnerships with global tech companies, and projects to expand connectivity. The DG also emphasized the need for African-built AI solutions that reflect the continent’s culture and languages.

“We cannot afford to miss this fourth industrial revolution,” he said. “This time, Africa must not only provide resources but also design, build, and own the technologies shaping our future.”

The DG urged governments, private sector players, and academia across Africa to collaborate on policies, infrastructure, and innovation ecosystems, adding:

“If we act together, Africa can lead in AI and secure prosperity for future generations.”

The Abuja sessions will be followed by the Tech Expo & Future Economy Conference on September 3-4 at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre in Lagos, alongside a Startup Festival at the Landmark Centre.
