FOLD ABLE SMARTPHONES: Unveiling iPhone Duo and Samsung Galaxy Z

By Tahir Ahmad

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, reigniting one of the most entertaining rivalries in consumer technology.

The company’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, has attracted considerable attention from smartphone enthusiasts who have long watched Samsung develop its Galaxy Z Fold series. With a book-style design, a large internal display and a premium price tag, the Duo appears ready to challenge Samsung’s latest offering, the Galaxy Z Fold8.

However, Apple’s arrival raises an important question: has the company introduced a genuinely different foldable experience, or has it simply refined a design Samsung has spent years developing?

Both phones follow the book-style foldable design. When closed, they function as conventional smartphones. When opened, they reveal a larger screen suitable for reading, watching videos, multitasking and productivity.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a slightly larger 5.5-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. Both internal displays support a 120Hz refresh rate and offer peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.

The similarities, however, end quickly.

Apple has equipped the Duo with a nano-textured, anti-reflective display designed to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable. Samsung uses a glossy display with anti-reflective treatment. Early impressions suggest that Apple’s crease is particularly difficult to see, although long-term testing will be necessary to determine whether this advantage survives months of use.

Apple has also introduced Apple Pencil support, giving the Duo an advantage for users interested in handwriting, sketching and digital note-taking. The Galaxy Z Fold8, in contrast, does not support Samsung’s S Pen.

The differences between the two devices become clearer when their specifications are considered in detail. The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Both processors are designed to handle demanding applications, gaming and multitasking, although real-world performance will depend on software optimisation and independent testing.

In terms of cameras, the iPhone Duo reportedly features a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. The Galaxy Z Fold8 offers a 50MP main camera alongside an ultra-wide camera. Although Samsung’s main camera has a higher megapixel count, that does not automatically make it superior. Image processing, sensor quality, stabilisation and software also influence the quality of photographs and videos.

Apple’s experience with computational photography, video processing and colour management could make the Duo a strong competitor for content creators. Samsung, however, has an established reputation for versatile camera systems and advanced video capabilities.

The two phones also differ in their physical dimensions. The iPhone Duo weighs 254g, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201g, making Samsung’s device considerably lighter. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is approximately 8.9mm thick when folded, compared with the Duo’s reported 11.3mm. These differences could matter to users who carry their phones throughout the day.

The iPhone Duo reportedly supports up to 2TB of storage, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 offers up to 1TB. For users who regularly record high-resolution videos, store large files or use their phones for professional work, the additional storage on Apple’s device could be attractive.

Battery capacity and charging are also important considerations. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a reported 4,800mAh battery and supports wired charging of up to 45W. Apple’s battery capacity has not been publicly confirmed, although the company’s power-management technology could influence the Duo’s battery performance. The iPhone also supports MagSafe and wired charging.

Durability is another important consideration. Apple gives the Duo an IP68 rating, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 carries an IP48 rating. The difference suggests that the iPhone has stronger protection against dust and water, although neither rating makes a foldable immune to damage. The durability of the hinges, flexible displays and folding mechanisms will ultimately require extensive real-world testing.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899 in the United States. This gives Apple’s first foldable a $100 premium over Samsung’s latest model.

That difference may appear modest within the luxury smartphone market, but the final cost could be considerably higher in countries such as Nigeria, where exchange-rate movements, import duties, shipping costs, retailer margins and taxes influence smartphone prices.

For Nigerian consumers, the price difference could become more significant if the naira weakens against the dollar or if import-related costs increase. A phone priced at $1,999 could therefore become considerably more expensive locally than its advertised US price. Buyers may also have to consider the cost of repairs, replacement parts and specialist servicing, which can be more expensive for foldable devices.

Apple’s premium could also increase demand for older iPhone models, particularly if consumers who prefer the company’s ecosystem decide to upgrade. Samsung, on the other hand, may respond with discounts, trade-in offers or promotional bundles to retain customers.

The larger question is whether consumers will pay more for Apple’s first-generation foldable when Samsung already offers an eighth-generation alternative.

Apple’s announcement has also reignited the familiar rivalry between iPhone and Samsung enthusiasts. Technology commentators and creators, including Marques Brownlee, Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything and Parker Burton, have become part of the wider conversation surrounding foldable phones. Their reviews, comparisons and technical discussions help audiences examine the devices beyond marketing claims.

Brownlee’s long-standing influence in smartphone reviews, Nelson’s reputation for durability testing and the broader online technology community have made foldable-phone comparisons especially popular.

Social media has added another dimension to the rivalry. Samsung supporters have questioned whether Apple’s entry represents genuine innovation, while Apple supporters argue that the company has taken time to refine the technology before entering the market.

Samsung has also joined the conversation by mocking Apple’s foldable phone on social media, accusing the company of recycling an idea that Samsung had already developed. The exchange illustrates how smartphone competition has become more than a contest over specifications; it is also a battle over brand loyalty, identity and technological leadership.

The iPhone Duo brings Apple’s ecosystem, a new processor, Apple Pencil compatibility, a reportedly subtle crease and stronger water and dust resistance. It could appeal to users who want a foldable phone that doubles as a tablet while remaining integrated with their existing Apple devices.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 offers a lighter body, a lower starting price, a mature foldable design and Android’s flexibility. Samsung’s experience could also make it a safer choice for consumers concerned about the risks associated with a first-generation product.

Ultimately, the better phone depends on what the user values most. Apple’s premium may be justified for those who prioritise its ecosystem and software experience. Samsung may offer better value for users who want a refined foldable without paying the additional cost of Apple’s debut.

As the iPhone Duo prepares to enter the market, which phone would you choose: Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo or Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8—and what would ultimately influence your decision?

By Abbas Badmus

With Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro expected to launch in September, the competition from Android manufacturers is heating up. According to TechRadar, at least seven upcoming or newly released Android flagships are shaping up as serious contenders—offering advances in artificial intelligence, camera systems, charging speeds, foldable designs, and more.

Here are the standout challengers:

1. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra packs a 200MP main camera, advanced zoom, and new Galaxy AI features that enhance both photos and productivity tasks. Its QHD+ display, long battery life, and versatile photography make it appealing to professionals and power users who want more control than Apple traditionally offers.

2. Google Pixel 10 Pro / Pro XL

The Pixel 10 Pro series is built around AI integration, with tools like Magic Cue and Camera Coach, plus an impressive 100× AI-enhanced zoom. While Apple is still expanding its AI ecosystem, Google positions the Pixel as the smarter companion for productivity and photography enthusiasts seeking next-generation experiences.

3. OnePlus 13

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and featuring 100W fast charging, the OnePlus 13 outpaces the iPhone’s relatively slow charging speeds. Delivering top-tier performance at a slightly lower price, it appeals to buyers who want flagship specs without Apple’s premium price tag.

4. Xiaomi 15 Ultra

Xiaomi’s Leica-powered quad-camera system gives the 15 Ultra professional-grade photography at a competitive cost. Offering image quality that rivals or surpasses the iPhone, its value-for-money proposition makes it a strong choice for users who want world-class cameras without the Apple markup.

5. Sony Xperia 1 VII

Designed with creators in mind, the Xperia 1 VII includes pro-level video and audio tools, expandable storage, and even a headphone jack—features long abandoned by Apple. It’s a compelling option for filmmakers, musicians, and content creators who need maximum flexibility.

6. ASUS ROG Phone 9

Built for gamers, the ROG Phone 9 delivers a 165Hz refresh rate, gaming triggers, and advanced cooling technology. Unlike the iPhone, it doubles as both a high-performance smartphone and a portable gaming console, making it ideal for those who demand immersive gameplay on the go.

7. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 introduces an 8-inch foldable display with advanced multitasking capabilities, offering a tablet-like experience in a phone. Apple has yet to enter the foldable market, giving Samsung a unique edge for professionals, creators, and tech enthusiasts who want futuristic design and productivity in one device.

With iPhone 17 Set to Launch Next Week, Google Doubles Down on ‘AI Phones’ With Pixel 10 Series — Here’s Everything We Know
By Shuaib S. Agaka

Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 17 lineup next week, but rival Google is already making waves with the Pixel 10 series, doubling down on its strategy to build the world’s first true “AI phones.”

Unveiled during Wednesday’s Made by Google event, the Pixel 10 lineup showcases deep integration of Google’s AI platform, powered by its Tensor G5 processor and running the newest Gemini Nano model. Google isn’t just competing with Apple’s hardware polish—it’s aiming to redefine what smartphones can do by embedding AI into every layer of the user experience.

Among the headline features is Magic Cue, a proactive assistant that delivers real-time contextual suggestions across apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Messages. Borrowing inspiration from the long-retired Google Now, Magic Cue surfaces reminders, suggests restaurants, or even helps manage errands—all directly within the apps you already use.

The Gemini Live assistant also gets a major update, with a new audio model that can detect the user’s tone—whether excited or worried—and adjust responses accordingly. Paired with a Visual Overlays feature, Gemini Live can analyze what your camera sees, highlighting objects on screen or even interpreting foreign street signs on the go.

Photography is another area where Google is betting big. The new Camera Coach will teach users how to frame shots better, while “Auto Best Take” blends multiple images to produce the perfect group photo. AI editing tools, including the Ask Photos assistant, will allow users to fix lighting, reframe shots, or erase unwanted objects with a simple voice command.

Perhaps the most ambitious new tool is Voice Translate, which promises real-time, natural-sounding translations during phone calls in over a dozen languages, using AI to replicate each speaker’s voice. If it works as advertised, it could be a breakthrough for both business and travel users.

Other additions include Pixel Journal, an AI-powered journaling app, real-time transcripts with “Take a Message,” and deeper AI integration across Gboard, Pixel Studio, and Notebook LM.

While Apple prepares its usual cycle of design tweaks and camera upgrades, Google is betting that AI-first hardware will finally shift the conversation from “better phones” to “smarter phones.”

Apple to Raise Prices Outside US Next Month

TECH DIGEST- Apple announced it will increase the price of apps and in-app purchases in South America, the Euro Zone, and other regions that are suffering from inflation and currency changes.

Due to inflation and declining global currency values, Apple plans to raise the cost of apps, in-app purchases, and subscriptions for iPhone and iPad users. People in a number of nations, including France, Germany, Sweden, Egypt, Japan, Pakistan, and Vietnam, will be impacted by the change. Users of the US App Store don’t seem to be impacted.

READ ALSO: NCC commits to bridging digital gender divide; Danbatta wins ‘Icon of Digital Revolution’ award

The adjustments will take effect automatically in October, according to a message Apple sent to app developers late on Monday. For instance, in the majority of countries that use the euro currency (designated by the symbol “€”), an app that was once 0.99 euros in price would now cost 1.19 euros. In Vietnam, Apple said, it is also changing prices in response to new tax rules there. “Your proceeds will be adjusted accordingly,” Apple told developers.

Apple stated that the modifications won’t affect automatically renewed subscriptions, but it added that developers might opt to either maintain existing prices for current clients or increase them to reflect the modifications.

Apple’s price increases are the most recent indicator of economic turbulence in a time of rising inflation globally, which is partly due to skyrocketing energy costs due to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. In order to reduce borrowing and spending, many nations have implemented higher interest rates in response to rising prices. Theoretically, prices would decrease as demand decreased. During all of this economic uncertainty, currencies all across the world have moved as well. For instance, the value of other nations’ currencies has decreased in comparison to the US dollar, as has the value of the euro.

Apple occasionally modifies the prices of its App Store, but this adjustment comes as the tech giant releases its newest smartphones, including the iPhone 14, which starts at $799, and the iPhone 14 Pro, which starts at $999, as well as amid a period of economic instability. For the most part, Apple has maintained those devices’ prices from a year ago. This week, Apple is also launching the Apple Watch Ultra, a new wearable built for extreme sports that costs $799, roughly twice as much as its basic Apple Watch Series 8 model.

Apple iPhone 14 to hit global tech market

TECHDIGEST – Apple Inc is set to unveil iPhone 14 at a yet-to-be announced date with mind blowing features.

Some of the new features in the iPhone 14 model range is likely to have the most recent chipset, which would be the A 16 or the A 16 Bionic. The iPhone 14 family is rumored to include support for 5G networks and may possibly boast an updated version of the 3D touch feature.

As stated on SNBC13 website, https://snbc13.com/apple-event-date-apple-iphone-14-expected-release-date-price-features/, Apple Representative, Jeff Williams noted that the iPhone 14’s battery may also be the source of improvements, as the capacity may increase as newer models get thicker.

An analyst at TF International Securities named Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a “great track record for Apple information,” said improvements are also expected to be made on the camera front. Specifically, a 48-megapixel main camera that is capable of recording in 8K video is anticipated.

Indeed, if historical patterns are any indication, the month of September is typically the one in which Apple makes an announcement regarding the release of a new iPhone.

The previous model, which was designated as the iPhone 13, was made available to the public for the first time on Friday, 24th September 2021. However, it was introduced as a new model on Tuesday, September 14.

There are many rumors surrounding the new iPhone, as there are before every potential event that Apple hosts. Will it have a battery that can charge more quickly, a front-facing camera that is of higher quality, or a new A 16 chipset? SNBC13 has reached out to Apple for a comment and has compiled the most recent information from the sources that are considered to have the most credibility.

While the date for the official launch will be announced soon, iPhone enthusiasts can anticipate that it will be presented at the following Apple event.

Apple is notorious for delaying the announcement of their launch dates until the very last minute. There will be an event, but it has been speculated that it will take place either on Tuesday, September 6 or on Tuesday, September 13.

There are persistent rumors circulating that the new iPhone range will be priced higher than its predecessors, which brings up an important question.

Ming-Chi Kuo, whom Forbes also cites, tweeted in response to Hon Hai Technology Group that he believed there would be a price increase of 15 per cent and that he believed the increase would take effect soon.

“One of the companies that has benefited from the increased average selling price of iPhone 14 series is Hon Hai/Foxconn.

“I estimated that the average selling price of the iPhone 14 series would rise by approximately 15 per cent (compared to the ASP of the iPhone 13 series) to $1,000-1,050 (USD) as a result of two price hikes for the iPhone 14 Pro as well as a higher shipment proportion,” he said.

Apple Brings Back Battery Percentage Icon In Latest iOS Beta

TECH DIGEST– In its most recent iOS 16 beta, tech giant Apple has brought back the battery % icon, which shows the real numerical amount of charge on the status bar.

The battery indicator reportedly made a comeback in iOS 16 beta 5, however, anyone using the beta still needs to enable it in the Settings menu. In the Settings menu’s “battery” section, just above the toggle for Low Power Mode, is the option to turn on battery percentage. The update is limited to the beta users for now.

READ ALSO- Institutional Investment Will Force Bitcoin To Hit $70,000

The battery % indication first appeared during the iPhone 3GS period and went away with the introduction of the notch on the iPhone X around the time of iOS 11 in 2017.

The chances are good that the battery % icon will return in late September with the official release of iOS 16 even though Apple does not typically maintain every beta feature in a final release, especially if early feedback pushes back on anything.

According to a recent report, iOS 16 will allow users to edit an iMessage up to five times before the option is removed from the long-press menu.
