The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that its Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN), a platform used by federal, state and local government agencies to share intelligence and coordinate emergency response, was breached in a cyberattack.

According to reports, attackers gained access to HSIN servers during late May and early June, potentially exposing sensitive information shared through the platform.

Although HSIN does not store classified information, it is widely used by government agencies and law enforcement to coordinate responses to major incidents, public events and national emergencies.

Confirming the breach, a DHS spokesperson said the department had isolated the affected systems, mitigated the vulnerability and launched forensic measures after detecting the incident.

“We immediately took action to isolate the affected systems, mitigate the vulnerability, and launch a comprehensive forensic investigation,” the spokesperson said.

The department has not disclosed what information may have been accessed or how much data was compromised. It also remains unclear who was behind the attack or what their motive was.

The breach has renewed concerns about the cybersecurity of U.S. government systems.

Senator Mark Warner, Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, described the incident as a potential national security concern, noting that while HSIN contains unclassified information, the data shared on the platform is highly sensitive.

According to Warner, HSIN is currently being used to support security coordination for the ongoing FIFA World Cup matches in the United States. The platform was also used last year to coordinate the response to the fatal mid-air collision involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C.

The incident adds to a growing list of cybersecurity breaches affecting U.S. government systems over the past year, intensifying scrutiny of federal cyber defences.
