GNC Launches Nigeria Forum for AI Governance
The Global Network for Cybersolution (GNC), a leading advocacy organisation focused on cybersecurity and emerging technologies for development, has announced the formal establishment of the Nigeria Forum for AI Governance (NFAIG) as part of efforts to strengthen artificial intelligence governance and policy coordination in the country.
The organisation said the initiative comes at a critical period when Nigeria is finalising its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and preparing legislative frameworks for parliamentary approval.
In a statement, GNC explained that the new forum is designed to ensure that Nigeria’s domestic AI policies and regulatory systems align with emerging continental and global frameworks, particularly the African Union Continental AI Strategy and the African Charter on Trustworthy AI.
According to the organisation, the initiative is also intended to position Nigeria as a leading voice in international conversations on artificial intelligence governance, especially within the framework of the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
GNC noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming economies, governance systems and everyday life, making it necessary for countries to establish inclusive and ethical governance structures capable of addressing both the opportunities and risks associated with the technology.
“The Nigeria Forum for AI Governance exists to ensure that local governance reflects the priorities of all Nigerians—not just the most technologically advanced—and that the benefits of AI are shared by all,” the organisation stated.
The group added that the initiative would help bridge ecosystem gaps while ensuring Nigeria plays an active role in shaping global conversations on AI regulation, ethics and innovation.
Highlighting the rationale behind the initiative, GNC identified three key priorities driving the establishment of the forum, including sovereign AI capacity, bridging the AI divide, and strengthening ethical oversight.
The organisation explained that the forum supports the African Union’s push for “Digital Agency” through the development of AI systems in local languages to promote inclusivity and preserve indigenous cultures.
It also stressed the importance of building Nigeria’s infrastructure and human capital in line with global efforts to bridge digital and technological inequalities.
“As AI transforms our world, GNC seeks to ensure we govern this transformation together rather than letting it govern us,” the statement added.
The organisation said the initiative is anchored on the principles of the Global Digital Compact and the newly established United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which seeks to provide a universal platform for governments and stakeholders to coordinate AI policies and share best practices.
Speaking on the development, the President of GNC, Dr. Segun Olugbile, described AI governance as both a technological and moral responsibility requiring collective action.
“AI governance is not merely a technical challenge; it is a moral and social imperative,” Olugbile said.
“By establishing this Forum, we are creating a dedicated space for AI ecosystem governance—a place where ethics, safety, and innovation meet. We invite all stakeholders to join us in shaping a future where AI serves the prosperity and peace of every Nigerian.”
GNC further disclosed that the Nigeria Forum for AI Governance would unveil a digital advocacy platform aimed at facilitating ecosystem coordination, real-time insights, policy engagement, innovation tracking, and community participation.
Founded in 2008, the Global Network for Cybersolution is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting digital well-being and national prosperity through cybersecurity advocacy, technology policy engagement, capacity development and innovative digital solutions.
The organisation said its activities are guided by a 12-point corporate agenda focused on fostering partnerships for a safer cyberspace and advancing responsible technology adoption across Nigeria.
