Meta-owned Threads has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, the company announced on June 16, as it unveiled a range of new community-focused features and content personalisation tools aimed at strengthening user engagement.

Meta said the platform’s growth has been driven largely by interest-based communities focused on topics such as books, sports, music and parenting. To support this trend, the company is expanding tools designed to help users discover, join and participate in communities.

Among the updates, Threads is officially moving its Communities feature out of beta testing. The platform is introducing a new Communities Hub that will allow users to browse and switch between communities directly from the main menu. Dedicated community icons are also being added to improve visibility and navigation.

The company is also launching a feature called Community Progress, which shows when a discussion topic is approaching the threshold required to become a formal community. The feature will also provide guidance on how users can help establish new communities.

In addition, Threads is expanding its Community Champions programme to recognise and reward active contributors across the platform.

As part of efforts to improve localisation, Meta said it is introducing native-language community tags in selected markets, beginning with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The company also plans to expand Live Chats to more communities in the coming weeks, adding features such as co-hosting and the ability to quote chat moments directly into users’ feeds.

Separately, Threads is rolling out a new personalisation feature called “Your Algo,” which builds on the existing “Dear Algo” feedback system introduced earlier this year.

The new tool allows users to request more or less content related to specific topics and set how long those preferences remain active, ranging from one to seven days. Unlike Dear Algo, these preferences remain private and are visible only to the user.

Meta said both features will be managed through a single control hub. Your Algo is initially being launched in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

The company said the updates reflect its ongoing efforts to improve the user experience and encourage stronger community participation across the platform.

Meta Platforms’ social media app Threads has surpassed Elon Musk-owned X in daily mobile usage, according to new data from market intelligence firm Similarweb, signalling a shift in how users engage with the rival platforms.

Similarweb data shows that as of January 7, 2026, Threads recorded about 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android, compared with 125 million daily mobile users on X. While X continues to dominate web usage, Threads’ mobile app has seen steady growth over the past several months.

The trend appears to reflect longer-term user behavior rather than a short-term reaction to recent controversies surrounding X. In recent weeks, the platform has faced scrutiny after users were found using its integrated AI tool, Grok, to generate non-consensual nude images, including of minors. The issue has prompted investigations by California’s attorney general, alongside probes in the UK, European Union, India, Brazil, and other regions.

The controversies have also driven increased app installs for rival social networking platform Bluesky, according to industry trackers.

However, analysts suggest Threads’ rising mobile engagement is largely driven by Meta’s ecosystem advantages. The app benefits from cross-promotion on Facebook and Instagram, a strong focus on creators, and a rapid rollout of new features. Over the past year, Threads has introduced interest-based communities, improved content filters, direct messaging, long-form posts, disappearing content, and has recently been spotted testing in-app games.

Together, these updates appear to be encouraging more habitual use of Threads on mobile devices.

Meta said in August 2025 that Threads had surpassed 400 million monthly active users, and later reported in October that the platform had reached 150 million daily active users. Similarweb previously noted that Threads was narrowing the gap with X on mobile after recording 127.8% year-on-year growth by mid-2025.

Despite Threads’ gains, X remains stronger on the web. Similarweb estimates that X currently attracts about 145 million daily web visits, compared with roughly 8.5 million daily visits across Threads.com and Threads.net combined. In the United States, X still leads Threads in daily active users, though the gap has continued to shrink over the past year.

Meta Expands Fact-Checking to Threads

TECH DIGEST- Meta’s newest social network, Threads, is launching its own fact-checking program after months of relying on Instagram and Facebook’s established networks. Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the rollout of this capability, allowing fact-checkers to rate and mark false content directly on Threads.

However, Mosseri did not specify the exact launch date or geographic limitations of the program. Details about Meta’s fact-checking partners for Threads remain unclear, though inquiries have been made for further information.

This move appears strategically timed for the upcoming U.S. elections, ensuring that misinformation can be effectively addressed on the platform. Despite India currently undergoing its general elections, it is improbable for Threads to implement such a program mid-cycle, typically preferring pre-election launches.

In December, Meta indicated its intention to extend fact-checking to Threads. Mosseri previously noted that while Threads currently matches fact-check ratings from Facebook and Instagram, the ultimate goal is to empower fact-checking partners to directly review and rate misinformation within the app.

Tinubu, Osinbajo, 30 million others join Threads App

TECHDIGEST – The president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and former vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo have joined 30 million others users on Meta’s new platform, ‘Threads’.

The Meta’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, noted that the company is setting its sight on one billion users soon. Threads, which launched on Thursday in over 100 countries now has 30 million users according to Zuckerberg.

He stated that in the first two hours of launching the app had two million sign-ups, which increased to five million in the first four hours.

Zuckerberg noted that the app has 10 million sign ups in seven hours. He revealed this on the app. At about 4 pm Nigerian time, he typed, “Wow, 30 million sign-ups as of this morning. Feels like the beginning of something special, but we’ve got a lot of work ahead to build out the app.”

According to reports, it took Google+ 16 days, ChatGPT 40 days, Clubhouse 347 days, Instagram 355 days, Twitter 780 days, and Facebook 852 days to hit 10 million users.

Threads is launching on the back of complaints against Elon Musk-owned Twitter, which has come under a lot of criticism since the billionaire acquired it. Recently, the app announced a view limit for tweets.

When a user asked if Threads would become bigger than Twitter, Zuckerberg replied, “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conservations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will.”

According to a report by The TechDigest, Threads might get monetise once it crosses one billion users.

The report quoted Zuckerberg, “Our approach will be the same as all our other products: make the product work well first, then see if we can get it to a clear path to one billion people, and only then think about monetisation at that point.”

Twitter currently has about 450 million users. Many public figures and celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira, as well as media outlets including The Washington Post and The Economist, have joined the app.

Threads is yet to be released in Europe because of concerns over data privacy. Meta has come under strong criticism in Europe, for its handling of personal data, and it could take a while before it launches in the region.

Meta may monetise Threads after crossing one billion users – Zuckerberg

TECHDIGEST – Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, on Thursday, said that the company may consider the monetisation of the new Twitter-like app called Threads, in the future.

He stated that while Meta is presently concentrating on getting more people to embrace the new microblogging app, the company will consider using it to make money once its users cross the one billion mark.

Zuckerberg stated this in his post on Threads on Thursday.

READ ALSO: IoT Revolution: NITDA Boss Urges Collaboration to Unlock Nigeria’s Potentia

He wrote, “Our approach will be the same as all our other products: make the product work well first, then see if we can get it to a clear path to 1 billion people, and only then think about monetization at that point.”

Threads is the latest social media application from the tech giant company and the app is expected to be a big rival to Twitter

The development came after the latter enabled a feature that limits the number of daily posts users can see on the app.

Threads like Twitter has text-based posts that can be liked, shared, and commented on.

Threads, as of the time of filling this report, already has over 100 million downloads.
