Mainstream social media platforms, led by YouTube and X, are directing millions of users to AI-powered “nudify” services that generate non-consensual explicit images, according to a new report by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD).

The report found that social media platforms generated more than 5.7 million visits to nudify websites between December 2025 and March 2026, challenging the perception that such services exist mainly on the fringes of the internet.

YouTube accounted for more than 30% of referral traffic, or about 1.82 million visits, while Elon Musk-owned X generated more than 1.3 million visits, making it the second-largest source of traffic.

Researchers said searches using terms such as “nudify app” and “undress app” on major social media platforms returned videos promoting the services, including tutorials, reviews and links offering promotional credits.

Most nudify platforms use generative AI to create realistic but fake nude images from ordinary photographs without the subject’s consent.

The report also found that many of the services charge as little as $1 per generated image, yet collectively generate tens of millions of dollars annually.

ISD researchers warned that the findings expose weaknesses in content moderation systems designed to prevent the spread of non-consensual intimate imagery.

“This should logically include nudify websites or tools that generate nonconsensual explicit imagery. However, content violating these policies was easily discoverable and accessible on the platform, effectively turning it into a gateway to nudify websites,” the report said of YouTube.

Melanie Smith, ISD’s Senior Director of Research and Policy, said YouTube was not merely a passive source of traffic but actively facilitated access to the tools through promotional content.

The report found that users frequently targeted current or former romantic partners, friends and family members, while motivations often extended beyond sexual exploitation to harassment, reputational damage and attempts to harm victims professionally.

Responding to the report, YouTube said it maintains strict policies prohibiting unwanted sexualisation, including synthetic or AI-generated nudity, and said those policies also apply to links directing users to external websites.

The findings add to growing concerns about the misuse of generative AI to create non-consensual explicit content and the effectiveness of existing safeguards on major online platforms.

YouTube has settled a lawsuit filed by a teenager who alleged that the platform contributed to mental health problems and social media addiction, according to lawyers representing the plaintiff.

The terms of the settlement remain confidential.

The case was brought by a 16-year-old Florida resident, identified in court documents by his initials, who alleged that excessive use of social media platforms led to addiction, sleep deprivation, depression and anxiety.

The lawsuit named YouTube as well as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok as defendants. While YouTube has now settled, the remaining companies are still scheduled to face trial in California next month.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the dispute had been resolved.

“Our focus remains on building age-appropriate products and parental controls that deliver on that promise,” the spokesperson said.

Lawyers representing the plaintiff said YouTube’s decision to settle before trial was significant and pledged to continue pursuing claims against other social media companies.

The case is among thousands of lawsuits alleging that social media platforms were intentionally designed to encourage addictive behaviour among young users.

More than 3,300 similar cases are currently pending in California state courts, while another 2,600 lawsuits involving individuals, schools, municipalities and states remain active in federal court.

Social media companies have denied the allegations and maintain that they have implemented extensive safety measures for younger users.

The upcoming California trial will be the second major state court case examining claims that social media platforms contributed to youth mental health problems through addictive product design.

YouTube has launched a new private messaging feature, allowing users to share videos and chat directly within the platform.

The feature is rolling out to users aged 18 and above in the United States and selected international markets, marking the return of private conversations on YouTube after the company discontinued its original messaging system in 2019.

According to YouTube, the new messaging experience was developed following positive feedback from tests conducted in late 2025, which showed strong user demand for easier ways to share content without switching to other apps.

Unlike the previous version, the new system incorporates additional safety measures. Users must verify their age before gaining access, while conversations can only begin after an invitation link is shared through a third-party messaging platform.

The feature is accessible through a new “Messages” tab located in the top-right corner of the YouTube app. Once connected, users can exchange messages and share videos directly within the platform.

YouTube said the invite-only approach is intended to encourage communication among friends and family rather than create a broader social networking environment.

The company added that all conversations will remain subject to its existing community guidelines and moderation policies.

How AI is Reshaping Future of Storytelling, Content Production and Filmmaking

By Abbas Badmus,

The video content industry is undergoing one of the most significant transformations since the advent of digital cameras. At the heart of this revolution is Artificial Intelligence (AI), a technology that is rapidly redefining how videos are conceived, produced, edited, distributed, and consumed.

From social media creators and marketing agencies to major film studios and television networks, AI-powered tools are becoming indispensable in the modern content ecosystem. What once required large production teams, expensive equipment, and weeks of post-production work can now be accomplished in a matter of hours or even minutes.

As AI capabilities continue to evolve, industry experts say the technology is not merely enhancing video production but fundamentally reshaping the economics and creativity of visual storytelling.

The global appetite for video content has never been greater. Platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and streaming services are driving an unprecedented demand for fresh and engaging content.

To meet this demand, creators and organizations are increasingly turning to AI-powered solutions that automate labor-intensive production tasks.

Recent advancements in generative AI have enabled users to create videos from simple text prompts, generate realistic voiceovers, produce digital avatars, create animations, write scripts, and even edit footage automatically.

What makes this development particularly disruptive is that many of these capabilities are now accessible to individuals with little or no professional video production experience.

A content creator who previously needed a camera crew, editors, graphic designers, and voice artists can now accomplish much of the same work using AI-driven platforms. AI is impacting virtually every phase of video production.

Script Writing and Content Ideation

One of the earliest stages of video production, content planning, is increasingly being assisted by AI. Content creators use AI systems to generate topic ideas, conduct audience research, develop story outlines, and draft scripts. By analyzing online trends and audience behavior, AI can identify subjects likely to generate engagement.

For businesses and media organizations producing content at scale, AI helps reduce the time spent brainstorming and researching ideas.

Video Generation from Text

Perhaps the most dramatic development is the emergence of text-to-video technology. Users can now enter a simple written description such as, “A drone shot of a futuristic city at sunset,” and AI systems generate corresponding video sequences.

These tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated, producing cinematic visuals, realistic motion, and detailed environments that were previously impossible without large production budgets.

For advertisers, educators, journalists, and content creators, this represents a major leap in efficiency.

AI-Powered Editing

Video editing has traditionally been one of the most time-consuming aspects of production.AI is changing that. Modern editing tools can automatically:

Remove unwanted pauses and filler words.

Generate subtitles and captions.

Select highlights from long recordings.

Correct audio quality.

Stabilize shaky footage.

Improve lighting and color grading.

Create multiple versions of content for different platforms.

This allows creators to focus more on storytelling and less on technical processes.

Voice Generation and Dubbing

AI-generated voices have reached a level of realism that is often difficult for audiences to distinguish from human speech.

Content producers can now generate professional voiceovers in multiple languages without hiring voice actors for every project. This capability is particularly valuable for global brands, educational institutions, and media organizations seeking to reach international audiences.

AI dubbing technologies are also enabling videos to be translated while preserving the speaker’s original tone and vocal characteristics.

Virtual Presenters and Digital Humans

The rise of AI-generated avatars is creating new possibilities for communication.Organizations can create realistic digital presenters capable of delivering training materials, news updates, customer service information, and educational content. These virtual presenters can operate around the clock, reducing production costs while maintaining consistency in communication.

Some companies are already deploying AI-generated news anchors and presenters for routine information delivery.

Meanwhile, one of the most profound impacts of AI is the democratization of content creation. Historically, high-quality video production required substantial financial investment. Cameras, lighting equipment, editing software, and specialized personnel created barriers to entry.

Today, AI tools are lowering those barriers dramatically. A small business owner can create promotional videos without a marketing agency. A teacher can produce engaging educational content without a professional studio. A startup can launch sophisticated advertising campaigns on a limited budget.

This accessibility is enabling a new generation of creators and entrepreneurs to compete with larger organizations.

The media industry is increasingly exploring AI-powered video production. News organizations use AI to generate subtitles, create visual summaries, automate translations, and produce short-form video clips optimized for social media. In fast-paced news environments, AI helps journalists accelerate production workflows while reaching audiences across multiple platforms.

For emerging markets such as Nigeria, AI presents opportunities to increase local content production, expand digital storytelling, and improve access to information in indigenous languages.

Media analysts believe AI could help address resource constraints faced by many newsrooms by automating repetitive production tasks.

The growing adoption of AI is also reshaping the economics of content production.

Businesses are reducing production costs while increasing output. Marketing teams can generate more content with fewer resources. Educational institutions can create training materials at scale.

Industry estimates suggest that AI-driven automation could save organizations thousands of hours annually in editing, transcription, localization, and post-production activities. At the same time, entirely new industries and job categories are emerging around AI content creation, including prompt engineering, AI workflow management, synthetic media production, and AI ethics consulting.

The Challenges and Ethical Concerns

Despite its advantages, the rise of AI-generated video content raises significant concerns.

Deepfakes and Misinformation

Perhaps the most pressing challenge is the misuse of AI to create deceptive content.

Deepfake technology can generate highly realistic videos depicting individuals saying or doing things they never actually did. As these technologies improve, distinguishing authentic footage from synthetic content becomes increasingly difficult.

Experts warn that unchecked proliferation of deepfakes could undermine public trust in media, political discourse, and digital information.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

Questions surrounding ownership and copyright remain unresolved in many jurisdictions. AI models are often trained using vast amounts of existing content, leading to debates over whether creators are adequately compensated or credited.

The legal frameworks governing AI-generated media continue to evolve as governments and regulatory bodies attempt to keep pace with technological advancement.

Employment Disruption

While AI creates new opportunities, it also threatens certain traditional roles within the production ecosystem. Editors, voice artists, graphic designers, and other creative professionals face increasing pressure to adapt to changing workflows.

Industry leaders argue that AI is more likely to augment human creativity than replace it entirely, but workforce transformation appears inevitable.

Despite rapid technological advances, experts emphasize that AI remains a tool rather than a replacement for human imagination.

Successful video production still depends on creativity, emotional intelligence, cultural understanding, strategic thinking, and authentic storytelling.

AI can generate visuals, edit footage, and automate repetitive tasks, but humans continue to provide the vision, context, and emotional depth that resonate with audiences. In many cases, the most effective content emerges from collaboration between human creators and AI-powered systems.

The Future of AI Video Production

The next phase of AI-driven video production is expected to be even more transformative.

Future systems may enable real-time video generation, fully interactive storytelling, personalized content experiences, and seamless multilingual communication. As computing power increases and AI models become more sophisticated, the distinction between traditionally produced and AI-generated content may become increasingly blurred.

For creators, businesses, educators, journalists, and entertainment companies, the challenge will not be whether to adopt AI, but how to use it responsibly and effectively.

In conclusion, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful forces shaping the future of video content creation and production. By reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and expanding creative possibilities, AI is democratizing access to professional-quality video production on an unprecedented scale. Yet the technology also presents complex ethical, legal, and societal challenges that require careful oversight.

As the world moves deeper into the era of synthetic media, one thing is clear: AI is no longer a futuristic concept in video production, it is an active participant in the storytelling process, transforming how content is created, consumed, and experienced across the globe.

The feature works by allowing users to upload a selfie-style facial scan, which YouTube then uses to search for potentially manipulated or synthetic videos across the platform. If a match is detected, users receive an alert and can request removal of the content.

The company said the expansion marks a major step in giving ordinary users the same protections previously reserved for public figures, politicians, journalists, and creators.

“With this expansion, we’re making clear that whether creators have been uploading to YouTube for a decade or are just starting, they’ll have access to the same level of protection,” YouTube spokesperson Jack Malon was quoted as saying by The Verge.

The likeness detection system was first introduced in October 2025 and operates similarly to YouTube’s Content ID technology, but instead of scanning for copyrighted material, it searches for a user’s facial likeness.

Users can access the feature through YouTube Studio by navigating to the Content Detection section and selecting the “Likeness” option.

YouTube cautioned that the system may also surface legitimate videos featuring a user’s real face, including clips from their own uploads, which may not qualify for removal under platform policies.

What Happens When AI Knows You Better Than You Know Yourself?

By Fatimah Yusuf Usman,

Sometimes, it feels like your phone is listening.

You think about something once—just once—and suddenly it appears. A video. A product. A song you didn’t search for but somehow needed. You pause, slightly unsettled, slightly impressed. It feels like coincidence, but it happens too often to be random.

It isn’t magic. It’s pattern.

Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are constantly watching—not in the way we imagine, but in a quieter, more precise way. They track what you click, how long you stay, what you replay, what you skip. They notice when you hesitate. When you scroll faster. When you linger just a second longer than usual.

They are not trying to understand you as a person. They are learning you as a pattern.

And patterns, over time, become predictions.

The more you use these platforms, the more accurate they become. They begin to anticipate what you’ll enjoy, what will hold your attention, what will make you react. At first, it feels helpful. Your feed gets better. Your recommendations improve. Everything becomes more tailored, more relevant, more like your preferences and desires.

But somewhere in that convenience, something subtle begins to shift.

Because when something can predict your behaviour consistently, it raises a quiet, uncomfortable question: how much of what you do is actually a choice?

We like to believe we are in control. That we choose what we watch, what we buy, what we care about. But the reality is more complicated. Every suggestion you see is the result of a system that has studied you—patiently, continuously, without distraction. It has observed thousands of your micro-decisions and built a version of you that is, in some ways, more consistent than the one you carry in your own mind.

You may think you’ve moved on from something. The algorithm remembers that you haven’t.

You may believe your interests are random. The algorithm knows they follow a pattern.

You may feel like you’re discovering new things. The algorithm has already predicted that you would.

This is where the line between reflection and influence begins to blur.

Artificial intelligence doesn’t just respond to your preferences—it shapes them. When you interact with a certain type of content, you are shown more of it. What starts as curiosity becomes repetition. Repetition becomes familiarity. And familiarity begins to feel like identity.

You start to believe that this is simply who you are.

But is it?

Or is it who you have been guided to become?

There is something deeply human about wanting to be understood. To feel seen, even if it is by a system that cannot feel anything at all. When your feed aligns perfectly with your mood, your humor, your desires, it creates a strange kind of intimacy. It feels like recognition.

But it is not recognition. It is calculation.

And that distinction matters.

Because the more accurately AI predicts you, the easier it becomes to influence you. Not in obvious, forceful ways, but in quiet, almost invisible ones. A suggestion here. A recommendation there. A carefully timed piece of content that keeps you engaged just a little longer.

You don’t feel controlled. You feel catered for .

That is what makes it powerful.

The danger is not that AI will suddenly take over your decisions. The danger is that it will shape them so subtly that you never notice the shift. Your choices will still feel like yours. Your interests will still feel authentic. But they will exist within a space that has been curated, filtered, and optimised for engagement.

And engagement is not the same as truth.

Over time, this can narrow your world. You see more of what you already agree with. More of what aligns with your existing preferences. Less of what challenges you. Less of what surprises you. Less of what makes you a better person.

Your reality becomes personalised and narrow. But personalisation can become limitation.

When everything you see is tailored to you, you lose the friction that helps you grow. You stop encountering perspectives that don’t fit neatly into your pattern. You stop questioning certain instincts because they are constantly reinforced.

You become more certain of who you are—without necessarily becoming more accurate. And then there is the question of memory.

AI does not forget. It stores patterns, revisits them, builds on them. It can recognise versions of you that you no longer identify with—late-night searches, fleeting interests, emotional moments you’ve moved past. To you, those were temporary. To the system, they are data points.

It remembers you in ways you don’t remember yourself.

There is something unsettling about that.

Because identity, for humans, is fluid. We change. We contradict ourselves. We outgrow things. We redefine who we are. But data is less forgiving. It captures snapshots and treats them as part of a continuous pattern.

So what happens when the version of you that AI understands becomes more stable than the version you feel? Do you start to trust it more than yourself?

Or do you slowly begin to align with it, simply because it is easier?

This is not a future problem. It is already happening.

Every time you stay a little longer on a video you didn’t intend to watch. Every time you buy something you didn’t plan to buy. Every time your feed feels so perfectly tuned that you stop questioning it.

None of this means technology is inherently harmful. AI has made life easier in countless ways. It has improved access, simplified decisions, and created experiences that feel seamless and intuitive.

But ease comes with a cost. And that cost is often awareness.

Because the more something understands you, the less you question it. The more accurate it becomes, the more you rely on it. And the more you rely on it, the less you examine your own instincts.

So the real question is not whether AI knows you better than you know yourself.

It is this:

If something else can predict your desires, influence your behavior, and quietly shape your identity… how much of you is still entirely your own?

And more importantly—

Would you even notice if that began to change?

The platform said it will automatically hold back advertisements during moments of intense chat activity or when viewers actively support creators through features such as Super Chat, Super Stickers or virtual gifts.

According to YouTube, the update is designed to preserve viewer experience and maintain momentum during live broadcasts. Users who make purchases such as Super Chats or gifts will also receive a brief ad-free viewing period immediately after their transaction.

The company also revealed additional updates for creators, including expanded access to gifting features in countries such as Canada, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

In addition, creators can now stream simultaneously in both vertical and horizontal formats, allowing audiences across different devices to participate in a unified chat experience. Viewers can also send GIFs in horizontal livestreams via mobile devices.

The update comes shortly after YouTube increased subscription prices for its premium service in the United States, part of a broader trend among streaming platforms adjusting pricing amid rising operational costs.

A jury in California has found Meta Platforms and Google’s YouTube liable in a landmark case involving alleged harm caused to a child through prolonged social media use.

The case, heard in Los Angeles, resulted in a $3 million award to the plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman who argued that early exposure to platforms such as Instagram and YouTube contributed to addiction and mental health challenges.

Jurors concluded that both companies were negligent in the design and operation of their platforms, finding that features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, and notifications contributed to prolonged usage.

The jury also determined that the companies acted with malice, paving the way for additional punitive damages to be decided in a subsequent phase of the trial.

Legal experts say the verdict is significant as it forms part of a growing wave of litigation challenging how social media platforms design their products, particularly in relation to younger users.

The case also highlights evolving interpretations of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law that traditionally shields tech companies from liability for user-generated content. In this instance, the lawsuit focused on platform design rather than content, allowing it to proceed.

Both companies have denied the claims and are expected to appeal the decision.
