TikTok has announced new features that allow users to send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in one-to-one and group chats. The company confirmed the update to TechCrunch on Friday, saying the rollout will take place over the coming weeks.
With the move, TikTok is seeking to expand its direct messaging capabilities beyond video sharing and position itself closer to platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram. The voice note feature will let users record and send audio messages of up to 60 seconds, a format that has gained popularity among younger users.
The platform is also enabling users to share photos and videos directly from their camera roll or capture them in-app before sending. However, TikTok said users cannot initiate new conversations with personal media files and will only be able to send TikTok content in their first message. The company will also display privacy reminders when photos or videos are shared.
In terms of safety, TikTok said DMs remain unavailable for users under 16. For those aged 16 to 18, its automated systems will block any nude images from being delivered. Users above 18 will be able to toggle this protection on or off in their settings.
The update comes as TikTok continues to expand its messaging product. Last year, the platform introduced group chats for up to 32 participants and Creator Chat Rooms for interactions between creators and their followers.
