The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee has reached a bipartisan agreement on legislation aimed at regulating social media use among young people, according to a joint statement released by committee leaders on Monday.
Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie and ranking Democrat Frank Pallone said the agreement followed months of negotiations across party lines.
While details of the proposal were not immediately disclosed, the lawmakers said the legislation is intended to strengthen protections for children online and increase accountability for major technology companies.
“We worked across the aisle for many months and have now found common ground on policies to significantly improve the digital environment for kids,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement.
The agreement comes amid growing concerns among policymakers, parents, and child safety advocates about the impact of social media on young users, including issues related to mental health, privacy, online safety, and excessive screen time.
Further details of the legislation are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
