Indian fintech entrepreneur Kunal Shah has been appointed as the new head of WhatsApp, according to an announcement made on Monday.

The appointment was disclosed by outgoing WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart in a post on X.

The leadership change comes shortly after Indian fintech company CRED announced plans to raise approximately $900 million from Meta.

Neither WhatsApp nor Meta provided additional details regarding the transition or Shah’s strategic priorities for the messaging platform.

Shah is widely known in India’s technology and startup ecosystem for founding CRED, a fintech platform focused on rewarding users for timely credit card payments.

The appointment marks one of the most significant leadership changes at WhatsApp in recent years as Meta continues to expand its messaging and digital services portfolio.
